I'm looking at a good deal on a NIB 49txi. I will be using it as a pre/pro and am wondering if there were specific upgrades to the MCACC function in the model change. Has anyone (Gordon?) compared this feature on the two units?

Thanks,

John

John...I've heard nothing but good regarding the 49 TXi. Gordon knows best, but I think the only difference between the MCACC between the 49 TXi and the 59 TXi is being able to output (via RS 232) a graph of your room acoustics to a PC from the 59 TXi via MCACC. Perhaps the 59TXi has added a couple more frequencies ranges it uses when setting up, too. But I think that's about it.

If the price of the 49 TXi is attractive, I'd say go for it. As it stands, you can get a 59 TXi for roughly $2,700 from an authorized dealer.

Thank you. I don't think that I know best, just more information available to me due to using of service manuals for both devices ...

You are absolutely correct, they are more or less the same. Both use 9 bands of fixed point equalization. The Advanced MCACC can use x-curve for final adjustment, not just flat FR as 49TXi and plus you can see the results on the screen of your PC and manually adjust FR ... This is a useful feature, but the precision of measurements and adjustments is the same.

Advanced MCACC may be a bit more accurate due to 96kHz DSP processing in MCACC DSD in 59TXi, and may be not - no one can say it without the analyzing of software library ... or having the exact information.

I second graphicguy's opinion :)

Concerning 3805 - I intend to publish some pictures inside it with appropriate comments, see them soon at my website. Ths device can be compared with 55TXi and in some points over-perform it, though in something 55TXi is better, though they are comparable.

No way it can compete with 49TXi/59TXi, even being used as pre-pro, this is a different league ...

Keep in mind the 59TXi has "Professional EQ" also which is different from the X-Curve Gordan mentioned.

Basically the Professional EQ determines if the sound is direct and/or reflected and adjusts the EQ accordingly.

The 49TXi does not have this feature though it is certainly not a deal breaker.

As a former 49TXi and now a 59TXi owner, I can add to the remarks regarding MCACC. The 59TXi adds the following options:

1. X-curve adjustment to higher frequencies, very similar to THX processing in that highs are cut by some amount based on audio response in room. I think mine was -0.5 dB. I chose to leave it off, so response is "flat",

2. More importantly - option to calibrate with reverb taken into account. Measurements are taken, and one looks at the initial response, from 20 up to 80 milliseconds (adjustable). A compensation can be made by telling the receiver to use response after a specified delay in milliseconds. I have not yet tried this, but am anxious to see what effect it will have with my Magnepan dipolar planar speakers.

As far as MCACC is concerned that's it. No more freq ranges or other changes as far as I can tell. There are other differences in how you can choose direct vs. processed sound, with the 49 being simpler and more, well, direct to use, and the 59 offering several additional options for a bit more flexibility (but also more complication).

I did decide to sell my 49 and buy the 59 and have no regrets. But I also did that with the knowledge that there were not major differences between them. I have to support Gordon and other opinions on the 49TXi. It is one really great, full-featured receiver. SQ is excellent. My advice is if you can get a good deal on one, you will not have any regrets. Enjoy!

SS,

You ought to give this a try. The Reverb measurements can be done and applied automatically.
