How does MCE 2005 handle DVD's that are ripped to disc?

I'd like to store the DVD's as files on a network server. Can MCE 2005 play them from a fileshare? Will the movies show up in the "My Videos" list? Is there a way to browse through all the movies in the library?

I like MCE 2005 and it does nearly everything I want except that MainLobby seems to have better support for browsing a movie collection and selecting a title which then launches the player and points it to the appropriate files.

Good question, am wondering the same thing. I'd like to use MCE only for music, rip'd dvds, and pictures - maybe weather too ;-).

The best way to manage ripped DVD's is with My DVD Collection (Above). At thegreenbutton.com there are 3 or 4 weathers apps for MCE (Downloads Section and Third Party Programs forum). MCE does music (WMA and MP3) and does pictures too out-of-the-box.

Thanks, for the info on mydvdcollection. It looks like a good approach. I'll do some more reading.

What would it take to have ripped DVD's show up in the "My Videos" section? Do they need to be simple .avi files?

I'd also like to know more about kmixer and ASIO. I've heard that the NVDVD audio section upsamples to 96KHz, but if you select another audio decoder, it sends 44.1KHz. I ask because I'm interested in audio playback as well as SPDIF passthrough for DVD's.

you can easliy play ripped dvd's out of the my video's section. just copy and past a shortcut of the folders for you movies in your my videos directory, and icons will be created for each one. I belive you can also now add the coverart to the icon as well.

So this Mydvdcollection app will only play ripped DVD's that are in an ISO file? What if all my ripped DVD's are in file mode (all IFO's and VOB's)? Do I have to create an ISO file for every one of them?

Side question - how do you create an ISO out of them?

Well assuming it's specifically designed for MCE at this point I'd probably suggest no, not very likely. At least, there are other products that can perform that functionality outside of MCE. If you're using an MCE box then this kind of thing would be beneficial.

puckalicious,

If you have the associated IFO's you can open the .vobs with DVD Shrink and use it to generate an ISO easily. If you only have the .vob file, you can use IFOEdit to create the IFO's first then use DVD Shrink.

But, according to the previous post, we do not need to convert to ISO format.?

Agreed. I was just answering the question about how to do it.

I use DVD Shrink and rip the main movie .vob for playing on a DSM-320. I lost all of the menus and special features by doing this. I have Sony TV's and I don't even know how an MCE unit will work as I have tried to build a HTPC using DVI out and the Sony's all had major overscan or underscan and did not look good at all. I would like to be able to use MCE to read the ripped DVD as a whole DVD as opposed to just streaming the individual .vob files.

So now that I know there will be no problems with playing .vob video_ts rips. Does anybody know if the linksys extender will play the information as well or is this just something that can be done from the main comp to its display.

I have the dsm-320 and it is a piece of junk. So this whole process of buying the WME and the linksys extender is useless to me if the extender wont play my movie files. The dlink will do it sometimes but never consistently and is full of bugs.

I have a small hdtv in the bedroom that meedio does a good job with but I would like to extend my movies to my other tv in the living room using wme and the extender. And if it will play the video_ts folders will the extender do it in the correct aspect ratio that the movie is in?

I have looked elsewhere for the answer to the extender and the movie files but haven't found it around here.

no, apparently I am finding out that the folder is ignored... I also read that you can renam the vob files to mpg files and it works fine on the extender....

goto thegreenbutton.com they seem to have a few threads about it.
