I'm a registered member of Microsoft's Partner website, so I qualified to receive from them an OEM copy of Windows Media Center Edition. I'm trying to set it up with my current system and am having problems getting my video capture device to work with it. I purchased an AIW 9600 and have downloaded the 9600 MCE drivers from the ATI website. Once I install them, it reboots and wants to try to install several more items (it searches for drivers online, and I've had it look in the driver install directory and on the regular install cd). It doesn't say what the items are, just that it needs to install drivers for them. There is about 5 items. I know that they are the tuner, WDM, etc... just not in what order. Anyway, it doesn't seem to want to find them anywhere.

I know that MCE has specific hardware requirements, but seeing that ATI has MCE drivers for this card, it would seem that I shouldn't be having this problem. In case it matters, here is the rest of the setup:

MSI K8N Platinum Mboard (GART and other drivers installed)

2 x WD1200BB 120 GB Hard Drives

1 GB PC2700 DDR SDRAM (2 sticks)

Lite-On 12x DVD+-RW

ATI AIW 9600

Onboard EVERYTHING (NIC, 7.1 Audio, 1394, USB 2...)

If anyone could help me out, I would greatly appreciate it. BTW, this is MCE 2005 (the new version)

you need to grab your original CD that came with the AIW card. It should have the drivers it's looking for.

ATI seems to have wanted to avoid giving away some software for free (that others normally pay for). Not entirely sure what the deal is, but I've heard about this problem before.

Good Luck....

If you look at the release note from ATI regarding their drivers for MCE you will notice that it doesn't include support for the Encode Portion of the ALL IN WONDER cards. (when you system reboots it starts looking for the drivers for the TV part of the card, which isn't included)

ATI used to sell a CD that had the encode software for MCE. Not sure if this works in MCE2005. It says 2004.

For some special reason ATI considers the Encode SW for MCE something special and don't make it easy for everyone to get.

The standard drivers that ATI provides for the TV part DO NOT work with MCE, at least now with 2004 so i doubt with 2005.

Yeah if you can, I'd recommend returning that AIW and getting a seperate Radeon and capture card like the eHome or the Hauppauge PVR-250.

Has anyone heard of the new PVR-500? It is supposed to have dual tuners in it for MCE 2k5. Since I only got the ATI AIW because it had the EasyLook interface (on screen TV information so that I could use the system without a monitor in the living room and still see what's going on), I don't know what my options are. I have a dual boot setup - XP Pro and XP MCE. I hate to lose the easy interface if I go to another card, but I really want MCE to work! Does anyone know if MCE will play DivX and other MPG4 files easily?

I may have stupid question. I just got a Dell computer delivery. I am supposed to get the MCE 2005. When I checked on the control panel, it said MCE 2002 SP2. The files were dated something like July 2003. Am I getting what I ordered? Are they just the same thing? Please help

So, if I were to take back my video card, what kind should I get? I just ordered a 19" LCD with a DVI input option that I would like to use. I'm not a 3D game player (although I wouldn't mind having a card that doesn't COMPLETELY SUCK in 3D).

I want a card that is passively cooled (keep it quiet) and works well and easily with MCE 2k5. What's the best one for my needs? I will get a tuner separately - maybe the new PVR-500 dual!

IIRC, the regular 9600 is passively cooled and works well for general video.

From posts above, I'm leary of the 9600 because of drivers. Is the 9600 MCE driver the only driver I would need with the standard 9600 or would I need to "find" other ones as others have suggested in this thread?

My regular ATI 9600 works great with MCE. I'd suggest that or a 9600 PRo if you want one a little more competent with gaming, they're both pretty cheap now.

Thanks cowtown! You've convinced me! What do you use for a tuner card?
