So far I have narrowed my search to the Popcornhour c-200, or the HDX-BD1, but neither of these come with a bluray drive, they are extra- are there any that come w/ the drive installed? Or are there other players that are better that can have a bluray drive attached?

I mostly have .mpg, .mts, avi, DVD-ISO, bluray-ISO and video_ts files, which these two will play... I think? Having wireless N is a plus, and ability to do Hulu and Netflix (I think the PH and HDX will do this, but not sure...?)

I'm an old computer/netwroker geek, but kind of new to the computer/home theater fusion going on here...

Oh, forgot to add- under $300 usd? The Dune Prime looks nice, but too expensive...

Sorry, not going to happen any time soon...as a matter of fact if anything, the price is going up.

I read somewhere that the PS3 has a BD drive.

I just use mine to play media via PS3 Media Server and TVersity. I play media HD media from my server and the Internet.

It does, but it is not a dedicated media player. The Dune Prime is, where as it can not player video games, is a far better media player / streamer than the PS3, and not everyone wants to go through the effort to set up a media server of their PC. Most want a device that works right out of the box

To follow along with that many of us do not want our content transcoded, which is exactly what is being done by TVersity/PS3MediaServer

The OP clearly stated that the Dune Prime is too expensive so not an option. The PS3 does fall in the price range and clearly is an option.

For some content yes, but not all. Most media I play on my PS3 is not transcoded...So back to the original topic...you want a media player with a built-in BD player for under $300...try a PS3. If you use it with Tversity, you can access Hulu and lots of other Internet content too.

Thanks for the replies.. the PS3 does look like it might work, but I have not even looked at it- I'm not much for console games... more research to do!

That LG Bluray player will network, but doesn't look like I could plug a HDD in and play .mts files directly... anyone know if the PS3 plays .mts files @ 1080p? I have an HD camcorder that does 1920x1080 30p, and wanted to play them w/o any conversion.

Jakeworld,

I tried the mts file and as you said the BD390 does not "see" it.

Then I changed the suffix from mts to mkv and it recognized it and played find. Picture and audio.

Give it a try on your file.

I couldn't believe the fix could be so simple, but looking at the mts file with Mediainfo shows it uses the H264 codec and AC3 audio.

That is your typical MKV video file.

Let me know how it works for you.

Another option, although a little convoluted (and according to some not worth it because it is too complicated for them to figure out) would be to get a Sage HD Theater extender.

This is only really worth it if you already own a PC with a Blu ray drive and a copy of AnyDVD HD. If you do, then the Sage extender can access the disc drive on the computer through the network the same as if it was attached to it locally.

Not striate-forward if all a person wants is a simple player to set next to their TV, but it is an option to look at if it fits your needs.

Otherwise, as other have said, the best option for a networked media player with Blu ray drive included for $300 I'd throw my hat in the ring for the PS3 too.

I owned a PS3 for over a year before I bought a game. I finally purchased Little Big Planet just to see what games looked like on the PS3 and I read that it was a good one. Besides that I use the PS3 as only a Media Player/Blu-ray player. I should also mention that I have an HD camcorder and play back all my AVCHD format movies on the PS3 either from disc or over the network.

The PS3 can play all the codecs and video files a regular media player can? How does it do audio...can it bitstream and all that?

The newer PS3 Slim can bitstream. The older fat ones can't, although they can output uncompressed LPCM.

That said, do your homework further, although the PS3 has more than enough power to handle any and all formats available, it has unnecessary restrictions (thanks Sony) on how it will handle certain formats based on whether they are on a disc in the player, on a USB drive plugged into the player, or being played back through a network connection.

Yeah, if you want the PS3 to be on the same levels as most other media players with regards to formats you need to have a separate app such as PS3MediaServer running. I personally view the PS3 as a gaming console/blu ray player. You can make it into a "media player" but that is by far not its strength
