"Fantasy Meets Reality."

Film Synopsis:

When an awkward teen meets his favorite porn star, whose career peaked in the '80s, an unexpected friendship follows as the young man gets a glimpse inside Monica Velour's current life as a single mom struggling to make ends meet.

My Take:

'Meet Monica Velour', the tagline "Fantasy Meets Reality." really is perfect. Tobe, an awkward (Dustin Ingram) Napoleon Dynamite-esgue teenager fantasizes about his favorite '80s porn star Monica Velour (Kim Cattrall). He has posters on his wall, collects anything she was in and scours hotel conventions for any old VHS or magazines. When fate aligns and Tobe has the chance to sell his graduation present, a hot dog vending truck AKA the "Weenie Wagon" to a Claude (Keith David) in the same state as Monica's first appearance in years, he high-tails it to meet his dream girl. Unfortunately his fantasy's reality is a 49-year-old chain smoking single mom living in a trailer in rural Indiana, willing to do anything for money, trying desperately to make ends meet. None of that matters to Tobe, who still sees his crush as she was, and he befriends Monica. When the reality finally kicks in, Tobe has to grow up fast, and though this meeting isn't what he bargained for, Tobe learns valuable life lessons from Miss Monica Velour.

The premise of 'Meet Monica Velour' looked really good, having the makings of a interesting indie black comedy. Unfortunately that fantasy was not the reality. The good were the performances. Kim Cattrall stole the show, selling this white-trash, has been porn star. I felt her characters life's disappointment, and she let herself look washed up, with many unflattering makeup-less scenes. Newcomer Dustin Ingram does a commendable job as Tobe, but the character is so blinded by Velour that there was not too much emoting that he had to do. The film spent way too much time with its repetition of beating the truth down out throats. We know she is a has been porn star and life sucks. We know he is a geeky awkward dude who is like a lost puppy. We know he doesn't get what's happening and is blind to the reality of his fantasy. If it moved on from the obvious truths there was a gem of an idea here, but as it is, 'Meet Monica Velour' is a bit of a disappointment, harping on the depressing aspects of the story and not enough of the funny moments that could have easily been played for more, and that might have evened out the feel.

Parental Guide:

Rated R for strong sexual content, nudity, language and some drug use.

'Meet Monica Velour' comes to Blu-ray Disc from Anchor Bay Home Entertainment featuring 1080p AVC encoded video that has an average bitrate of 25.2 mbps and Dolby-HD MA 5.1 Surround Sound that has an average bitrate of 2.5 mbps.

Anchor Bay delivers another great transfer with its release of 'Meet Monica Velour'. Shot in 35mm, this is a filmic and highly detailed release-- my favorite kind, where details combine with a light coat of grain. The films color is rich, with a warm golden hue that fits its dry and sun-soaked rural landscape quite well. Blacks levels had decent shadow details but they never got as dark as we like to see. This is a worthy high definition release. The 5.1 Dolby TrueHD is nothing to show your system off with, but it handles what its asked to quite well. Dialogue is its main focus and all dialogue comes over quite clear. It's a nice smooth natural sounding track, with a warm feel to its soundtrack, never sounding bright. The LFE and surround channels don't got much of a workout, but you wont miss them as the film doesn't call for much activity.

Bonus Features:

  • Audio Commentary with director Keith Bearden and Actress Kim Cattrall

  • (HD) Deleted Scenes

Final Thoughts:

Anchor Bay delivers another gorgeous new release with 'Meet Monica Velour'. The film has a great idea, it just never runs in the direction I hoped (and it should have). I have a feeling many of you might check it out as curiosity to its plot might win you over. It is certainly worth a rental especially considering its great performance by Kim Cattrall and its wonderful looking video. Go for it, just remember I told you so.

Pretty hot for 55 huh?

So does anyone have their own Monica Velour? I was into Nina Hartley when I was a wee lad.

Michelle Maylene is my guilty pleasure. The late Marilyn Chambers when I was a foul youth. These days making out of focus internet porn can make you a wealthy celebrity or an athlete's wife. I liked it better when it was dirty.

I never learn their names
I would fast forward to the scenes, and hope of not getting busted..But the big name at the time of my young, was Vanessa Del Rio
Mooooow!
The sexiest lips, mouth I've ever seen at my tender age.

And yes Kim C. looks amazing at 55, just a good looking mature woman.
