Messenger contacts

For those of us with big friends lists the new Dashboard is a big win. It allows you to have up to 500 additional contacts via Messenger. While it's not perfect, it does make it easier to track more people on the 360 and PC.

The biggest issue is you need to have the email account that's linked to your Gamertag added to someone else's linked Messenger account. Since not everyone uses their primary email address for their Gamertag it can be tricky to figure out what address to use.

I'm just curious what the advantage would be to using Messenger to contact people on their 360s via Live. If you have a web browser, you can just point to xbox.com and send messages to any of your friends from there. I'd rather not have Messenger installed and running in the background all the time. Is there something cool that I'm missing out on?
I may be in the minority, but I would like no part of having my MSN list on my 360. I use IM systems for professional/work related client support, there's no way I need them knowing I'm playing xyz or abc or whatever.

Fortunately I long ago abandoned MSN in favour of Google Talk, but still, I'd rather have nothing remotely related to MSN on my 360, it's a magnet for spammers and viruses.
you're definitely in the minority..

who cares if some client sees you playing an xbox 360? Will they think less of you or sever ties?
because he is billing for those hours playing forza

this is FUD. There has NEVER been an unassisted virus on WLM. It takes an IDIOT at the computer to click on a link sent to them through the interface. WLM has even included idiot proofing by now including virus scanning in the product for file transfers.

The only way you can get spam on your WLM is if you allow them on your contact list. There is a very handy option to block users not on your contact list. You will never get spam that way.

It is amazing that in homes with no IDIOTS, computers rarely get viruses....but in homes that do the computers are overrun with spyware and viruses.

Viruses don't harm computers....idiot users downloading and clicking on things they shouldn't harm computers.

Hmmm...that's true, I hadn't thought about that. IM is one of our main communication tools at work and to have someone go "hey, see you played Mini Golf for 3 hrs this weekend" wouldn't be that cool.

You also have two options. You can be signed out of messenger on your 360. Or when you turn your computer on that has messenger it logs you out on your xbox. So you can be home playing games and get "work" done via IM
with no one knowing.

You can have a Messenger account for work and a separate one for home. This may be an issue if your Gamertag is tied to your work email, but otherwise you'll be using a different email (Messenger account) anyway.
I made everyone at work switch to my gamertag linked messenger account so they would see what xbox games I'm playing.

To each his own...

used messenger once. dont see any since as only shadowrun is cross platform. I know H2 is also but I prob wont be bothered with either anyway. been stop H2 and Shadowrun doesnt look that interesting.

Also, I tried siging in on the 360 but it wouldnt let me... oh well, dont use messenger anyway.
I am using it on Live since my business associates can contact me on the fly when I am gaming. - nice perk when you are in the developer you don't look bad playing games.

In fact, they messaged me when i was in the Forza demo. Chatted for a bit and then had to go to the other room for some whiteboard stuff.

Not sure who you're condescending towards, but I've never gotten a virus from MSNMessenger, just removed boatloads of crap from client's & friend's computers after they got them and/or spyware. And set it to NOT start automatically when the computer starts, an option Microsoft seems to think is good for mankind.

I just don't need an IM tool on my 360, and I despise Messenger.
I've got a question. How do I unlink my 360 and messenger? i've only seen an option that let me sign out of messenger. That works until I turn off my xbox and then power it back on again. Once I do that, I'm automatically signed back into messenger. I want to remove that link. I've not honestly looked to far into this issue as I was primarily concerned with getting my NAT set to Open yesterday instead of Moderate. Any help would be appreciated.
