From Opeth's website:

Roadrunner will issue a special edition deluxe version of "Ghost reveries" on the 25 th of July.

Bonus material include a 40 minute documentary about the making of the record complete with the bands own private tour footage, a cover of Deep Purple's "Soldier of fortune" recorded for UK's BBC radio, the video for "The grand conjuration", liner notes, photos, enhanced 24 page booklet, deluxe sleeve, and 5.1 surround exclusive mix of the record made by original mixed/engineer Jens Bogren.

They don't mention a high-res format, but a surround mix should be fantastic with all the sounds/tracks on this album.

This is good news. GR is a great recording to begin with, and the documentary should be good (like the one on their last DVD).

Chris
Ghost Reveries was the best album of 2005, IMO, so that is exciting news! I'm annoyed at having to buy yet ANOTHER album again, though. I've decided to hold off on the new Flaming Lips album until it comes out in 5.1--gotta draw the line somewhere.

I hope the 5.1 mix is a little more aggressive than the 5.1 mix of Mastodon's Leviathan, which was hardly different from the stereo...

As a side note, does anyone have the DualDisc of Lamb of God - Ashes of the Wake? A great album, but I was skeptical as to how it would benefit from 5.1 sound...
This is awesome news. Here's hoping the 5.1 mix will be hi-res given GR was released as a HDCD and the Steve Wilson/porcupine tree connection.

Although all that video would take up a lot of space if it's a single disc release.

Have it, found it pretty bad. The vocals are mixed distractingly way up (apparently in all 5 speakers - zeroing the center doesn't help) and you're right, there's too few elements to really benefit from a surround mix (which isn't a bad thing). Dolby digital only too. It's a fine, brutal album in stereo, but doesn't really get any more brutal with more speakers.

I agree, Leviathan was a pretty weak 5.1 mix. I have the Ashes of the Wake DualDisc too and I think my copy is posessed. The surround mix is pretty mediocre, but on one of the songs the vocals speed up to like double the normal speed, and the music stays at the same pace. I dozed off the first time I listened to the dualdisc and when that started it scared the CRAP out of me, I thought Satan had entered my dvd player.... Then I sat up and just laughed.

I'll have to check out GR when it comes out.

We need more metal releases in 5.1 (with GOOD mixes) :D

Leviathan sounds like it was recorded in a tin can to begin with, so I guess I wouldn't have much hope for the surround mix. I actually read somewhere that Leviathan was criticized for being too "produced". Geez, I know that it's supposed to be hardcore, but that doesn't mean it has to sound like crap. Other metal CDs I'd like to see in 5.1:

Orphaned Land: Mabool (this would be amazing)

Moonspell: The Antidote (sounds great in stereo)

I agree 100%. Despite being mellow, Damnation is my 2nd favorite Opeth album. Phenominal song-writing.
I agree, it's totally mellow, but an awesome disc.

Do you listen to Katatonia at all? I'd love to have Viva Emptiness and the Great Cold Distance in sacd.

Just to update everyone, Roadrunner postponed the release of this album until October 31st. Info from Roadrunner's site including disc contents and cover art:

I hope it is in high-res, but I'm not holding my breath.

Does anyone here have the Xandria - Ravenheart SACD? I quite like it, though the sound isn't great at all.
That should be sweeet! I hope its a hi rez version in there
Too bad i don't have a 5.1 setup anywhere :(
Well, I purchased the deluxe CD/DVD release today and gave the 5.1 a listen. First off, it's only in DTS or DD 5.1, no high res DVD-Audio. First impressions were that clarity is improved, especially in clean guitars/vocals sections, but overall depth is not up to par with what I'm used to on surround recordings. The mix is pretty boring as well. I was really, really hoping they would've used the surround channels aggressively for the ambient keyboard parts, vocal harmonies, and complex multi-layered guitar riffs. Instead it's pretty standard "stage" imaging across the front three. Some prefer that, but I may have spoiled my preferences by picking up the three DVD-A Porcupine Tree releases recently which are outstanding, unorthodox mixes IMO. While I am a bit underwhelmed with the disc, it was still worth the 17 bucks for the documentary and the better-than-CD clarity.
Yep, seconded. Well worth it for the extra clarity (Is it 96/24 DTS? my player doesn't indicate) and the bass is appropriately brutal, but it's hardly an adventurous surround mix. Still, it could have been worse ... at least it's not a ridiculous abonination like the DD 5.1 version of Ashes of the Wake.
