I was on my second original amp which blew recently. Now waiting for the "new" version.

So to be a bit proactive, I would like to look into 3rd party alternatives for amp sourcing. i.e. what amp can I utilize with my sub so it performs well? In my setup I could easily hide any type of amp near the sub so it does not need to fit the current amp cavity. I can simply leave the old amp in to insure the enclosure is sealed.

Any help or feedback would be great.

I do not want to discuss av123 or bash them. They may well take care of this for me. I am simply being pragmatic in case things do not work out.

The issue is I do not know enough about sub design, amps or attempting to replace a set design. Any links, information, or suggestions would be great.

Thanks

its a ferrite bead RF filter, to reduce interference and hum issues.....

I put mine on!

To match what is built into the official amp, you need something that puts out 350 watts and can apply some EQ, details of which are not public. Probably two boxes. For the expense and effort, I would be inclined to cut my losses and sell the things.

On second thought, I bet you could take the old av123 plate amp and run the signal through it, bypassing the faulty amp module and output section and instead connect to an external pro amp.

You would need to drill a few holes the get the pre amp wires out and the post amp wires back in, but you definitely have room for that.

I have a couple bad mfw amps (who doesn't) that may be worth hanging on to.

Ok those are some good thoughts. So from the sound of it matching an amp will be an issue due to not having enough information on the EQ. But your saying that if i am able to bypass the amp in the old plate and use their filter, I may be able to use an outside amp (ran through the plate) to utilize the built in filter?

Is that about right? What type of amp should be utiilzed for this? Any recommendations?

I am hopeful the new amp is delivered but I am still waiting and have read of a few issues on peoples new amps now. nice to hear of the new filter for the hum, but I never had an issue as I run all my power through a APC 20BLK. Its how I knew my amps busting was not me the first time it happened!

Is the driver 4 ohms or 8 ohms?

You can buy a pro amp to driver it many choices out there that give you atleast 350Watts.

Or something from Parts Express, O-audio or Elemental Designs all have a good selection of plate amps (I hope they fit). Just wire them in and worry less about any EQ at that point because its a ported design and tuned as such so EQing does not really exist besides any plate amp will have a SSF to protect the driver and minimum EQing on the amp.

IMO the discussion about EQing is completely overblown!! You can drive it well with any pro amp or plate amp that has enough Watts. Ported designs are not EQed like Sealed designs!

You can simply EQ in room with either Audyssey or with a Sub EQing system, that you should own anyways with any quality sub

I do not know what they would EQ with a ported box...I doubt they did anything and I suspect the amp is off the shelf stuff re-label. Same amps can be purchased from Parts Express, O-audio, Elemental Designs, etc.

Well then if its as simple as wiring in a new amp thats fairly easy. Heck i have to rewire the replacement amp anyhow!

Penngray, thats a GREAT question. I now have two dead amps. If I knew someone I could trust to at least look at them and identify the issue, they could probably be fixed. Although since AV123 is not doing that, it may be a major component, or multiple component issue; meaning fixing one part will simply delay the inevitable until another fails. I could even figure it out on my own most likely, but that would be a LOT of brushup work on electronica I am not inclined to do.

In the end, I am thinking AV123 is going to get me something, but I like being prepared.

Im curious about all these dead amps......if its an easy fix or not.

I believe you only have to worry about the new amp fitting and if it doesnt fit you have to modify the enclosure.

What about mounting an external amp (on the sub or locally) and running the wires through the old amp plate which is left in place but with a couple new holes courtesy of a drill bit?

Then you could use any amp you wished correct?

Correct!

The Behringer EP1500 has more then enough power for it

I never understood why so many people wait and wait and wait for an amp replacement when there are so many cheap pro amps available.

Thats not a bad idea as I ran both an LFE run and 12 awg speaker wire run from my rack at the time I built my theater. I could buy a rack amp, and utilize it instead of the plate amp. I could even do this now while I wait for the replacement amp since I have two dead plate amps. Thats nice.

Is there going to be any significant sound difference utilizing a different amp? Is 12 AWG enough to carry somewhere betwen 500-1000 amps?

Otherwise I can place the amp near the sub and use the LFE line to feed it.

Amps will not have any SQ difference and yes 12 AWG is fine. Since you have two then the EP1500 is a perfect temp solution.

Hmmm...The Pro amps though do not have a Sub Sonic Filter built it so you need to still protect your driver below 15Hz somehow. $100 EQ.2 will do it, there might be cheaper options out there but I can not remember then at this time.
