North-central Indiana and Southwest Michigan are less than a week away from getting digital PBS. I received an e-mail from the Director of Broadcast Operations at our local PBS station, WNIT-DT (ATSC channel 35).
Quote:
Dear DTV Viewers:

The wait is almost over! WNIT-DT will go on the air next Wednesday, April 30, at 1:45P. We are planning on being on the air from 2:00P.-12 midnight daily, with our normal analog signal and programs duplicated on our digital channel, except where HD versions of these same shows are available from PBS. Here is a list of the PBS programs that we will be airing in HD during the month of May:

05-11-03 @1900 NATURE #2009 - "A Mystery In Alaska"

05-14-03 @1900 PETER AND PAUL AND THE CHRISTIAN REVOLUTION #101

05-14-03 @2000 KINGDOM OF DAVID: THE SAGA OF THE ISRAELITES #101W

05-18-03 @1900 NATURE #2010 - "War Wrecks of the Coral Seas"

05-21-03 @1900 PETER AND PAUL AND THE CHRISTIAN REVOLUTION #102

05-21-03 @2000 KINGDOM OF DAVID: THE SAGA OF THE ISRAELITES #103W

05-28-03 @2030 AMERICAN MASTERS #1607 - "Robert Capa: In Love and War"

We welcome your feedback on signal quality and receivability, and please feel free to contact us here at WNIT with your questions and concerns. Technical questions can come to me directly, and you can direct programming questions to Angela Moisenko, our Programming Director.

Thank you for your interest in WNIT as we enter a new era of broadcasting!

I just received another e-mail from the Director of Broadcast Operations at WNIT. Starting Wednesday, June 4th, WNIT-DT will be broadcasting the PBS HD Demo Loop from 2PM-midnight EST. PBS HD Programming will appear when broadcast. This will continue until November, when the FCC rules requiring Simulcasting the analog station's programming go into effect, or until other HD programming options become available.

More information about WNIT-DT can be found at their DTV website .

If you check the PBS DT schedule for May available at:

http://www.ptvdigital.org/dt2a_may.html

you will see that the programs listed in the email as "HD" are actually something called "Widescreen SD" (which I'm guessing is similar to Fox's widescreen 480P format). It's nice-looking, but short of the real deal. Apparently, someone at the station does not understand the difference. There are a few "true" HD programs (including three series aired daily), but most non-loop PBS DT programming appears to be in this format for now.

The balance does seem to be shifting a bit towards true HD in the next two months (substitute "jun" or "jul" for "may" in the URL above to see the schedule for those months).

BTW, ptvdigital.org has a lot of good material, including interviews with PBS people that give an indication of where things are going in the future.

Just found out about this yesterday. Getting a rock solid signal watched the Robert Ballard Special in the black sea. PQ was great.
