Microsoft plans new software for television set-top boxes Microsoft said it will announce new software for televisions Monday to revive its TV business after several cable companies delayed plans to use Microsoft products. Microsoft will announce a program for low-end TV set-top boxes, said spokeswoman Erin Brewer, who would not give specifics. The software will focus on features such as programming guides and video on demand and will work on set-top boxes in use in about 10 million homes, said Matt Rosoff, an analyst at market researcher Directions on Microsoft. Microsoft previously concentrated on software for more advanced boxes, which aren't yet in use. When companies, including AT&T and Charter Communications, decided to focus on the older boxes, they delayed or shelved plans to use Microsoft's program in favor of software from a rival. — Bloomberg News |
