I did a few searches on the forum, and I came up empty on this problem.

My 42" ED plasma (Philips) has a great picture except in the following scenario:

When I play a DVD and a dark scene is showing in the movie, I get what I'd describe as a "mini-blind effect", where there are noticeable horizontal bands about 1 1/2" tall.

It doesn't happen on HD or SD shows, just on DVD's. I have upgraded the S-video cable already to no avail.

Any ideas?

Thanks,

Is your dvd player progressive scan? If not, I'd suggest getting one (or maybe just borrow a friends) and see if you still have the problem using progressive scan over component. Even if you weren't having problems with your s-vid input you should do this. Increase in pq is dramatic.

Also, it might be progressive but not turned on. Go through the the DVD setup menu and make sure its set to progressive ..... mine was OFF by default.

Since the bands are 30+ scan lines wide, I can't see how progressive versus non-progressive plays a part. I'd guess inadequate internal shielding is letting an interference signal (the DVD's motor perhaps) into the system.

Does your TV let you make fine adjustments of the picture position? If so, do the bands move with the picture if you move it up and down or stay on the same on the screen.

I appreciated the suggestion for a progressive scan DVD player, but I had already purchased one when I bought this plasma, thanks again to this forum.

But Kurt's comment did the trick:

"Also, it might be progressive but not turned on. Go through the the DVD setup menu and make sure its set to progressive ..... mine was OFF by default.

I went into the setup, and 480i was the standard output. Changed it to 480p, and poof! the banding was gone!

Thanks again to everyone!
