Before posting a question in the DVD and LD Hardware forum, please read the following Frequently Asked Questions (and Answers) list to see if your question has already been answered recently.

In addition to the Q&A below you can find a wealth of answers by using the search button (upper right area of your screen):

Q1: What is a chroma bug? How do I see it? Does it destroy the universe?

A1: Technical explanation of chroma upsampling error aka chroma bug along with images:

Q2: What is the best DVD player?

A2: Remember, there is hardly ever a single ultimate "best" out there, not necessarily in a certain price bracket. Some people think only picture quality matters, some think that de-interlacing is more important while others think the user interface must be perfect. In the threads linked below you will find some recent answers to the question" what is the best dvd player":

Q4. Can I use European DVD player in the USA or vice versa?

A4: In short, yes you can, but you may need:

- a transformer to correct for the electrical difference between the continents: 110V/60Hz (USA) vs 220-240V/50 Hz (EU). In most cases a simple plug that changes from US standard to EU will NOT do.

- a multi-norm television / projector that can display both NTSC and PAL signals (most displayes sold in EU have been like this for the past few years)

- a region-free modification to play dvd discs from different regions (e.g. region1 from US and region 2 from Europe)

Q6. What is pluge, below black, coefficient, 3:2 pulldown, etc?

AVS Forum is reasonably high volume discussion board and same answers get asked repeatedly. If you don't get an answer it might be that nobody knows or more likely, because your question was just answered half a day a go.

Please try to use the forum search, for you'll find a wealth of answers there:

http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/search.php

Then again, if you can't find an answer please post your question. There are many knowledgeable AVS Forum members here that can probably help you with your problem if you're at your wits end.

When posting a question try to give people a little bit information about your situation. For example:

"What is the best DVD player below $1500 USD that does SACD/DVD-A playback well and is availabe in USA?"

Please try to avoid generic questions for which there is no any sensible right answer, like:

"What is the best dvd player?"

There are so many reasons why a dvd player can be better than many others, that it is impossible to give any feedback, unless it's known what features are important: usability, speed, reliability, price, absolute picture quality performance, progressive image quality, sound quality with CD, DVD-A or SACD playback, compatibility with DVD-R/DVD-RW, DVD+R, DVD+RW, SVCD, MP3, WMA or AAC formats, and so on.

Suggestion: you might want to include (1) the links discussing the best prices and sources for DVD-RAM and DVD-R media; and (2) the various "will the Apple DVD-R or the CD Recordable DVD-R work in my recorder?" threads...these seem to be subjects of frequent interest...

Maybe a link for a question similar to:
I bought a widescreen TV, but how come my widescreen DVDs still show black bars above and below the picture?

Of course referring to 2.35:1 aspect ratio discs on 16x9 displays. This has got to be one of the top ten most asked question on all the major forums.

Okay, I'll put my take here until Halcy updates his FAQ post on this topic with something more official sounding...

The Displays

Older "squarish" TVs = 1.33:1 (or 4x3)

Newer "widescreen" TVs = 1.78:1 (or 16x9)

The movies

"fullscreen", pan & scan, full frame = 1.33:1

"widescreen" movies can be 1.66:1, 1.78:1, 2.75:1 or anything larger than 1.33x1. Usually though, they're 1.85:1 or 2.35:1. Notice 1.85:1 just about fits perfectly into a widescreen display because it's very close to the TV's 1.78:1 aspect ratio.

Note: Just because it says "widescreen" doesn't mean the entire picture will show up on your widescreen TV without black bars. It's just simple math.

Personal opinion

"Fullscreen" or Pan & Scan = bad. These are widescreen movies cropped and mangled to fit 4x3 displays.

"Full Frame" = not necessarily bad. These are often older movies that were always meant to be 4x3 because that's how they were shot.

I won't get into the concept of "Open Matte".:D

I have looked and searched to no avail. Do DVD recorders record in multi-channel sound? Surround sound?
