Mirage S10 Review

For you Mirage fans out there these are Tom Nousaine's measurements on the S10 in his 7500 cu. ft. room: {2 meters ground plane at 10% distortion}

Extension: 20hz at 82db

Average SPL from 25 to 62hz: 104db

Maximum SPL: 109db at 62hz

Bandwidth Uniformity: 95%

These figures are about 4db under the output levels of the S12 in each category. In a smaller room you can expect it to perform just like it's bigger brother. However despite it's excellent numbers, I believe the current retail price tag is a bit hefty.

I Posted this in another thread, but Ian is right. The current retail price of the S10 is a little steep. However, for those who are eyeing the S10, I just put my two S10's up on eBay for less than the price that Vanns is selling the S8 for. Bought both of them new last fall, then got two S12's less than a month later when Vanns added them to their inventory. Don't think they are even fully broken in yet, to be perfectly honest.

The S10's were great, but being kinda anal, I wanted the black S12's to match the rest of my all-black Mirage setup, and maximum SPL and extension from the 12" drivers. Wanted to keep the S10's, but nowhere to use them. I have a pair of Onix ELT PBS sub-stands in one of my 2-channel rigs, and full range Swan Diva 6.1 speakers on the other 2-channel setup.

I'm sure I'll regret selling the S10's, probably blow up my S12's right after UPS takes the S10's away.

I decided to post this info because of all the fuss about the S12 which unfortunately is no longer available a Vanns. For those looking for the S12, the S10 is close enough in performance to the 12 to be seriously considered, if you can get a deal on one.

Ian,

I just checked the Vanns site, and the S12 is still available for pre-order. You just have to use their search function and enter "S12". It will take you right to it.

Yeah, but they have yet to deliver to many of the folks that are on the waiting list and it appears the date when they'll get more in stock seems to keep moving further away.

Their next shipment was supposed to be something in the neighborhood of 200 units, and Vanns has been consistent in stating that they are on schedule to ship during the third week of May.

As of the second week of April, they still had 60% of the units with that shipment available for pre-order, but I don't know how many more sold since then.

For anyone that's interested in the S12, it would be worth a quick e-mail to their customer service department to see what the current status is. So far, they have responded to any inquiries within an hour.

Since they are now selling the S10 for $100.00 more then the sale price of the S12, I seriously dought that the S12 will be readly available any time soon. You normaly don't see any great price reductions until the fall when companys start preparing to move older stock and get ready for the Holidays. Unfortunately what happens is that a lot of merchandise including the new products that are shown at CES, will not become available until late spring or early summer, and retailers start to run out of product by January. The problem is you end up under stocked in between. When I was in this business I use to do all my opening orders during this time, but because my dealers had to wait several weeks for their orders to be filled, it was the slowest time for me.

Ian
don't take this the wrong way REL, but the S12 saga has been going on for months now. They have been on backorder or pre-order status since at least early February. The people that were put on the pre-order list back then were told the 3rd week of March, then the 1st week of April, then 3rd week of April and now 3rd week of May. I don't know "consistent" that is. I do hope that they do finally get some in as it is a great deal and I wish everyone luck, but I wouldn't hold your breath for one to show up any time soon. The deal seems "too good to be true" and unfortunately many people are realizing there might be some truth in that saying.
I ordered my S12 from Vann's on March 9th and it shipped on the 10th. This has not been going on as long as some of you guys keep saying.
From what I recall reading on other threads is that the last batch shipped complete in early April, and I was on the next batch that was scheduled to ship the third week of May.

Even though Vanns doesn't show the S12 as being in inventory due to the demand, it appears as if there has just been as series of shipments that are being fulfilled through the pre-order process.

The way I look at it, if the S12 doesn't ship by the end of the month, I can still cancel the Vanns order and place an order for the SVS PB-10 instead (the black model that I would want is backordered until early June). Either way, I end up with one heck of a sub for less than $500.

You probally ordered when they just received there stock . Then they sold out in 2 days. I know I preodered then canceled after 2 weeks then ordered a PB10. Same may happen again if they are getting 200= all preoders whats left the pre order again??
It figures that after I responded to the delivery issue yesterday, I received an e-mail from Vanns stating that the delivery date had been pushed back to the end of this month.

Oh well, I guess it doesn't hurt to eat a little crow from time to time... :D

I figured as much. From the threads that I've followed, it seems like for some folks, the date has slipped more than once in regards to shipping.
