Mits WD 62827 Light Engine Problem

1894 Views 3 Replies 2 Participants Last post by  noplasma
My just out of warranty set was diagnosed yesterday with a bad light engine. Is it cost effective to have replaced, or should I start looking for a new set. Any chance that Mitsubishi would do anything to help with the cost? From the reading I've been doing it seems that this seems to be a fairly common problem with their DLP's. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I've heard stories of people have success with getting Mits to help with "just-out-of-warranty" situations. You may need to talk to a supervisor when you call their support.

A full-up light engine replacement is probably pretty expensive ($500+??). Can you describe the symptoms? Do you know how your tech concluded that it's the light engine that's faulty?
There is a shadow that starts at the left top of screen, at the right it is approx. 3/4' tall. Program content can be seen behind shadow. The only thing the tech did was call Mitsubishi, was told that the light engine was bad. He did take the screen loose at the top left of set and looked inside and agreed with what he was told on the phone. I was given an estimate of $1850 to replace, this was done by an authorized Mitsubishi repair center.

That sounds similar to the problem that Toshiba owners were experiencing:

Looks like the Toshiba owners had a DYI fix. Perhaps something similar is possible with the Mits set?
