Mitsubishi DVHS and Samsung DLP TVs

789 Views 7 Replies 4 Participants Last post by  jjost
Hello:

I searched and have not found 'definitive' information on whether the following setup works:

-Mitsubishi HS-HD2000u or 1100u DVHS VCR?

connected via Firewire to:

-Samsung HL-R...I've got a 5067W but I don't believe it should be different.

what I'm trying to figure out:

1. Can I record HDTV from firewire out of the TV into the VCR?

2. If the answer to 1 is yes, have people been able to successfully schedule recordings using the TV Guide setting?

3. finally, if it is recording via firewire can you watch a different input (say tivo through svideo?)

I tested a firewire recording device on the samsung and it did not allow 2 or 3...but allowed 1. Trying to figure out if I'll have the same problems if I go get the Mitsubishi...

Thanks in advance...

phantomdilbert, did you ever resolve your issue? I also have a Samsung HL-R5067W, and I can't determine whether either a Mitsubishi HD2000u or an RCA DVR2160 will work let me schedule recordings with TVGOS. --Regards, John

I do not know the asnwer but I do know that the firewire recording scheduling is ususlly handled by the firewire source or in your case the TV. The DVHS is simply a passive device that does what the firewire source tell it to.

I use the Mitusbishi 1100u with a firewire STB and all the recording capabilities are done in the STB (MIT MDR-200).

I have a Mits RPTV with firewire and I would assume that the Samsung works similarly when recording to DVHS. So -

1. Yes - in fact with the 2000U that's the only way you can record HD.

2. I've never tried to record using TVGOS but I doubt it would work. You're controlling the DVHS over firewire and I don't think that TVGOS has access to that part of the circuitry. The Mits has a record timer function that is separate from the TVGOS which is what I use for firewire recordings - as part of that you select whether the record destination is the analog record out jacks or firewire.

3. Maybe yes, maybe no. On my TV I can't - once the firewire recording has started you can't change the source or even turn off the TV without stopping the recording. On the next model up in the line you can switch sources. I solved this problem by getting a separate STB (Sam T165) and a second 2000U that are independent of the Firewire connection on the TV - I use that pair for recording if I want to watch something else at the same time. The record timer on the STB is also more flexible on program length than the one on the TV, plus I can record 2 HD programs at the same time if I want.

Well, you learn something new every day - and never say never. Recording to DVHS using TVGOS does work on my setup - my curiosity was piqued and I tried it tonight when I got home. I'm sure it was made easier by the inherent compatibility between the Mits TV & DVHS machine and the flexibility of the setup options in the Netcommand program included with the Mits TV's. I had never tried to use TVGOS to record before, always used the VCR timers for analog and mostly my T165 for digital. I've been taping for close to 30 years (still have a couple Betamax's down in the basement) and always thought that VCR+ and TVGOS were for sissies who didn't know how to program a VCR. Don't know how the Samsung TVGOS will work with the Mits - I think they have something like the Netcommand, try it and see - YMMV. I still couldn't change the channel or input, but I could power off the TV while the timer program was running.

agb2529, Thanks for the response. It would make sense that the Mits TV and the Mits D-VHS would work together. I'm just trying to figure out whether my Samsung will. Since I would be recording scrambled HD via the cable card in my HL-R5067w, the recording could only occur over the firewire connection. Since the HD2000u doesn't have a timed recording function, I believe that the only way I can do a timed recording is using the TVGOS on my Samsung. I just can't find anyone who can confirm that would work, and I don't have the financial wherewithal to just go out and purchase an HD2000u and see for myself. --Regards, John

How funny that I posted this months ago, did a google search because I still had not found and answer, and low n behold here's my old thread =).

So far: 5067w to rca 2160, can record, but not well (does not do scheduling, only real time, and it's sloppy).

Have not tried the hs2000u yet. Not sure if I can justify $130 for the experiment.

I ended up picking up a series 3 tivo..and that has satisfied my hi def time shifting needs.

phantomdilbert, thanks for the update. You've clarified for me that the RCA DVR2160 won't do scheduled recordings on my Samsung HL-R5067w, which likely also means that neither will the Symbio or the CinemaVu. Unfortunately, the Tivo Series 3 is way out of my price league. So, the only available possibility appears to be the Mits HD2000u. --John
