Mitsubishi HS-HD2000U vs JVC 30K DVHS vs DVD+/-R

1081 Views 7 Replies 5 Participants Last post by  Bruce Embry
How does this Mitsubishi DVHS digital recorder stack up against the JVC in terms of reliability and compatability with the MyHD card and MIT software. Will the DVHS tapes I have made already using the JVC play on the Mits and vice versa?

I understand the JVC has an ATSC decoder with 1080i component video and AC3 output (an attractive feature for me) and is D-Theater capable. Since I am not concerned with D-Theater that much and I am willing to use the MyHD card as the HD decoder, I am looking for an alternate archive mechanism.

I am down to this Mits for $500 or a DVD+/-R drive in my PC for $350. Having to take a VCR off the rack every month or two to pop the lid, scrub the heads, pinch the roller, and do a voodoo chicken dance is not an acceptable option for me whether it's a Mits, Pannie, JVC, or Broksonic.

Hi hardwired.

We don't have much durablity information on the Mits deck. But from a poll that is listed on this forum, the JVC is running a 15 to 20% percent failure rate. Personal I don't think JVC products are built to the same quality level as Mits. I already have a Mits D-VHS deck and have had no problem with it.

The JVC does not have an ATSC decorder in it. It has an MPEG decoder with 1080i componant video output. Since you are not concern with playing D-Theater and the HD PC card will provide the componant video output, then the Mits deck will be your best bet.

It has been noted on this forum that only the JVC deck has had these problem with the pinch rollers ETC.

I think that owners of Penny D-VHS can speak to their duriablity. The Mits deck should be more trouble free then the JVC.

Bruce,

How long have you had the Mits and how many recordings and hours of use would you say you had on it. What is the maintenance regimen and also, which model is it?

Thanks for the correction on the JVC decoder.
Hardwired,

Here is a chart of my results using the Mits and JVC making recordings with DVHStool and MyHD software. I could never get good recordings out of the Mits. In fairness though, both Cliff Watson and Joe Q are doing fine with it. I never did get to the bottom the issues I was having with the Mits so I sold it. But that doesn't mean you will have problems since there are others who are doing well with it.

I have had my Mits D-VHS since June. I record at least 2 hours every night. I rotate between 3 DVHS tapes. So far no problems. The only problem is that sometimes after I fast forward past a commercial, then restart the program, the taped picture becomes a bit jumpy as though it is missing a frame or two. I just stop and restart the tape or turn off the D-VCR and start watching again. BTW... I paid $429 at Tweeter in June.
FBlack,

That's a great price! Is that for the 2000U?

How did you manage that pricing from Tweeter, my local Tweeter has it priced at $599.

Thanks.
I bought a pair earlier this year for $450.00 each.
Hi Hardwired,

I actually have two Mitsubishi VCRs. I have the SVHS unit HS-U775 and the D-VHS HS-HD2000U. When I got the D-VHS back in June, I immediately popped the covers on both of the VCRs to compare the transport mechanisms. The newer D-VHS tape transport is almost exactly the same as the transport that came in the HS-U775. The major difference between the two transports is that the new D-VHS has faster wind times in the fast-forward and reverse modes. We use the new VCR about 5 hours a week.

I have had the HS-U775 VCR for three and half years. I just pop the cover and clean the heads and guides the first time this past spring. I did the work myself using VCR cleaning kit from Radio Shack. Depending on the types of VCR tapes that you use, your millage may different. I tend to stay with TDK and Maxell high quality types. I am making this comparison to show that the transport of the Mits D-VHS should be very stable.

The D-VHS is the 4th VCR that I have every purchased. My first VCR was a Mits back in 1984. It lasted 12 years with just regular maintenance.

My second VCR was a JVC unit, which I purchased in 1996, it lasted 3 years, and ended up in the trash.
