I know that there is a long discussion on the Mitsubishi Promise Module (Mits PM), but I know that the discussion assumes that the reader knows what the Promise Module is supposed to accomplish. :D

I don't consider myself an A/V guru, however, I don't consider myself a naive user either. But for the life of me I cannot figure out why I would want the Mits PM. I own a Mitsubishi WS-48311, a Hughes DirecTV HD receiver, and a Sony Surround Receiver. From what I can tell, the Mits PM is essentially a over the air HD receiver. If this isn't true, then what is it?

The documentation says that it doesn't add any input format capabilities (so if the TV doesn't accept 720p, then it still won't accept 720p). If I already own a HD receiver, what is the benefit? If there isn't any, then that's fine I can deal with that. I just can't get the answer from the official source. :)

Thanks for answering this question to a confused consumer.

Yeah I made the cardnal sin of electronics by looking at all the newest stuff without the ability to purchase. The Netcommand feature is pretty nice compared to pushing input a lot. :) However, it isn't cool enough to warrant a $900 purchase.

Thanks for the info, though. It is appriciated.

I agree. I have a Mits 55511 (Platinum), so it has the built-in NetCommand 2.0, Firewire and OTA HD decoder. I'm all satellite (DirecTV), so the OTA HD feature does me no good. NetCommand is fun, but NOT worth $900.

The salesman at SoundTrack here in Colorado told me a new Promise Module is coming out this fall. It adds NetCommand 3.0 AND a DVI input. I'd love to have DVI in addition to Firewire, BUT, the price tag is $1500!!!

Thanks alot Mitsubishi...

I have a few comments here!

The Promise Module has a Firewire interface. When this interface is connected to a D-VHS recorder, you can tape OTA digital programming in full resolution. If you have another HD receiver connected, then you can record an HD program while watching another HD program.

The So call new Promise Module is the HD5000. It does not have an DVI input, but it has an DVI output for connection to an DVI equipped HD monitor. The HD5000 has all of the same features that an Mits intergated HDTV except for the display.

The FCC is about to aprove the Cable Plug and Play agreement. They will most likely give there go ahead on the agreement this week, and when they do, both Firewire and DVI will be the digital interface standards.
