I called Magnolia today to see what their sale price on the WD-52525 is and they said they didn't have any more because they were being discontinued due to the screen glare. Has anyone else heard this? I also read on here that Tweeter had stopped carrying them too. Mitsubishi still has the TV on their site, but that doesn't really mean anything.

If they are in fact discontinuing this, what does that mean for the WD-52725? It would seem that Mitsubishi has a hole in their price points and no longer has a TV in this segment. WD-52725 is significantly more expensive, and the WD-52327 is missing a tuner and other features.

Any word on the new Mitsubishi offerings for 2005?

The 525 is still current model, it isn't discontinued as of yet. You will start to see the new Mits product roll out in late July so until then this will be current product. The 525 was a model that only BB and Fry's was going to carry. Higher end retailers like Tweeter, Ultimate and such only were carrying these TV's until the 735 and 825 came out. The 327 series which is a stripped down version on the 525 will be the entry level until the new product comes out. Hope this helps.

PS-

There is only a 200$ difference between the 525 and the 725

HH Gregg in my area used to sell the 525 models and discontinued selling them and are now selling the 725 models in place of them. It's too early for the 525's to be discontinued as Mitsubishi hasn't even had a press release about their new models. And like mentioned, if they do as they did last year they'll be out in the July/August time frame.

I brought a 52525 in early February from BB for what ended up being $2499 with 36 month 0 % financing. It took 30 price comparison with 10% coupons to eventually get the price down to $2,499. There was no way Tweeter or Audio Video Connections was going to let me have a 52725 for $200 more and 36 month financing back then. I also knew I had a room with controlled light and the screen would not be a problem. The 52525 has more connectivity then the 327.

I also picked up the 52525 at BB for $2599. They had an open box 52525 so I purchased that and ended up receiving a new set instead. The store told me to keep it and enjoy. Nice. To solve the glare problem, I just removed the screen. It was a snap to do. The connectivity is better than any other microdisplay I looked at.

This model has been around since about Jan/Feb. It is a stripped down version of the 525 and also it isn't a true 720p display.

It is a 720p display... it is just that it will not accept a 720p input signal via component or DVI. All of the inputs are converted to 720p for display, but the set only accepts 480i, 480p, or 1080i inout resolutions. There is no internal ATSC or QAM tuner in the set either as well as no VGA port, netcommand, firewire, or HDMI port (there is DVI).

Why would they come out with something like this so late in the game since after July it can't be manufactured?

Really makes NO sense!

To compete in the market in which people are not interested in paying for an internal QAM and ATSC tuner, firewire, netcommand, etc... not really a smart move, but to Mitsubishi it probably was nothing to for them to put this new set together... same light engine as the 525/725/825 coupled with a stripped down hardware chassis from a lower end CRT display... very little R&D...

But, this late in the season? Ok on the no ATSC/QAM tuner, but what about the 720p deal as mentioned eariler?

What difference does it make?

From what I understood when their DLP models first came out, there is a conversion to analog for any DVI or HDMI input. The analog is de-interlaced or scaled as needed before converting back to digital for display.

Mitsubishi is probably using CRT based circuitry for all their current DLP sets. It doesn't seem to hurt the PQ.

My problem was windows and glare in the same room.

It was a point that someone else brought up that seemed to be a issue.

Along with everyone else that doesn't like their "glare screen". The 325 still has that screen doesn't it?

No, the 327 series doesn't include the highly reflective protective shield. It comes with the trim kit pre-installed :)

Almost sounds as it would fit the bill for many here (not me though), but not accepting 720p seems to make it limited as far as STB's etc. What outputs 1080i?

I think pretty much any cable STB can be configured to output 1080i... you will just have to rely on the STB scaler to be decent when it has to take a 720p channel to 1080i for display.

This unit was slated to come out before the Diamond series and after the 725 series sets. It wa to give a more cost effective way to get a great DLP set. I can tell you that you will NOT see any glare screens on the new line up from Mits except for the Diamond line and the to be announced Diamond LE line up. I can't wait!

I'm glad I got my glare screen on my 52525 while I could, then. It is a great shield against crayon. :)

Chances are that Magnolia decided not to carry the set anymore and they consider it to be "discontinued." Mitsu is still selling them.

The last digit in the model denotes year changes. The 327 is the newer model and the 527 will be the direct replacement for the 525. It already has a sku in the Best Buy computer system, although I didn't check an instock date.
