Mix & Match Speaker wire?

1021 Views 3 Replies 3 Participants Last post by  Peter White
I'm moving components around in my HT. The receiver will no longer be in the center of the room, but along one side. That causes two questions:

1) Can I reuse the old wire along with some new, longer runs I'll need? The gauges will be different, but I'll use the better wire for the longer runs.

2) Is there any problem with the different wire lengths? For example, the left surround will be just a few feet away from the receiver, and the cable to the right surround will have to run half-way around the room, maybe 35 feet. Pardon my ignorance, but is there any "lag" or "sync" issues I'll have to contend with?

Thanks!

Of course!

If by better you mean thicker gauge.

No sync or lag issue. Just make sure your 35-foot length use 14 AWG or bigger.

Thanks! That's a big help!

As long as the gauge is large enough for the distance, it's no problem at all.

The electrons move rather quickly through the wire. Not quite at the speed of light in a vacuum, but much closer to the speed of light than the speed of sound. So wire length will have no effect on timing, at least none that we humans would ever notice.
