Don't know if this has been answered before, i looked and didn't see anything. Would it be alright if i used dipole side surrounds and direct radiating rear surrounds, or is it a bad idea to mix 2 different types of speakers for surrounds? I want to upgrade my 5.1 to 7.1, i have paradigm reference studio all around and i'm not sure if i should get the adp or studio 20 for rear surrounds. The performance of direct radiating surrounds for multichannel dvd-a/sacd is of no issue to me, this is strictly for home theater.

The THX spec requires dipoles for the sides and direct radiating for the rears. Thus, in theory, all of the signals (fronts, sides, rears) are running parallel to the listener sitting position.

I went to the thx website and it said this concerning thx ex and back surrounds.... "For optimum results, THX recommends use of two THX Ultra-certified dipole speakers for the back surrounds. However, allowing for customer preference, a pair of direct radiating speakers can also be used for the back surrounds under a new THX specification."

Guess it really doesn't matter, thanks for the input though.

I've never seen a dipole that wasn't a direct radiator. I think the term you're looking for is monopolar; a monopole speaker as opposed to a dipole.

Any speaker in which the diaphragm acts directly against the air without an intervening device (such as a horn or bandpass enclosure) is a direct radiator, regardless of how many sides it radiates from or in what directions.

Hi,

My reiever allows for 3 sets of surrounds 1 of which are the effects or ex/es surrounds.

I use set A which are direct firing for music and set B which are dipole for movies.

Sometimes for movies i use all of them.

Until i got this A/V reciever i only had dipoles and was very happy with the results.
