Mixing Marty’s with Monolith 12” ported

562 Views 7 Replies 5 Participants Last post by  LGERIC
I should never have looked into diy subs (sigh).

I can potentially squeeze two full marty’s behind my screen wall, where I planned to keep my Monolith 12” ported subs. The Monoliths could move.

Q: How big are concerns over mismatching? Everything will be ported.

Q: Any concerns about ONE full marty, centered and lying on it’s side behind the screen wall, while moving the monoliths to the back corners?

Any/all types of subs "can" be blended, but it can be a real pain in the a$$ to get it done right versus running all the same multiple subs in my experience...

As long as they are tuned similarly you shouldn't have any major integration issues. The only thing you'll have to manage is getting the levels set so that they run out of steam at similar levels, but you should have a good amount of headroom which makes that less of a major issue.

Thank you for your tips :)

Now, here come the corollary questions:

“Tuned similarly”: Do you mean port tune, EQ, HPF, or something totally different?

I should mention I’ll be using REW and a minidsp.

Mostly box tune. All of those things you listed will affect phase to a degree, but if box tune is similar then the HPF will be similar as well. Armed with REW and a mDSP integrating them should be a relative breeze.

Full disclosure- I was too embarrassed to look up “box tune” when i read this, but i had to look it up.

This quickly evolved into: Well why SHOULDN’T I have two tapped-horn destroyers in my basement!?

I thank you. My wife does not.

May as well go with four... you know... to even out the response ;)

I have 2 18" rss460ho sealed and 1 Dayton sub1200 ported. I think it is all about managing expectations. I understand the 12" will never keep up with the 18" but it adds a good fullness. May not be perfect but it works.
