OK, I tend to hate the 'which should I buy' threads, but just like talking on the phone while driving, I'll do it even though it pisses me off. If I were to just get one, which should it be? These are both games I never played back in the golden age of PC gaming. I am kind of leaning toward Monkey Island. I like pirates and monkeys.

both are excellent. i don't think you'd be disappointed with either. hopefully you'll play one, love it, then play the other.

My wife and I have been playing Sam & Max on the Wii and have really been enjoying it. I assume by Monkey Island you mean the updated version of Secret of Monkey Island and not the first episode of Tales of Monkey Island? If so, it's a toss-up most likely, but I gotta say, I have incredibly fond memories of Secret of Monkey Island from over 15 years ago when my roommates and I played it in college! My wife's never played that game, either, just the third and fourth Monkey Island games, so we'll likely pick it up in time. I'm sure I don't remember the puzzles at all after so much time.

Get 'em both!

I never played the old sam and max games, just recently played the new games. It's mildly entertaining. Not what I remember Monkey Island to be way back. But I'm a different person, so it could be the same thing.

Really the only games I remember are the Tim Schafer ones.

Well Monkey Island was created by Tim Schafter (along with Ron Gilbert and Dave Grossman)
