Monopole side surrounds needed if far away from seating?

1001 Views 2 Replies 3 Participants Last post by  sdurani
I've got a situation in my room where the main seating lines up with a large window on one side. Due to this, if I wall mount my side surrounds, I'd need to put it above the window. This turns out to be 8.5 feet from the center seat.

Now, I've read a majority of the threads on bipole/dipole/monopole speakers and from what I understand, bipole/dipole speakers would work if they were closer. Would monopole be needed here due to the distance away?

I have a pair of bipoles I was using in my old place, where this distance was much closer. Don't have everything wired up yet, but thought I would ask if anyone thinks it might be worth trying out something different here.

(Edit: I'm hoping this is the right subforum for this)

You're just fine posting this here.

And, with regard to your question.... I personally feel you will be just fine with whatever speaker/sound you prefer as your side surrounds. The fact that they are farther away is negated when you calibrate your system.

Whether you do it by ear and get the level matching close or use a RAT SHACK SPL meter and get it spot on, the fact is one or the other will be playing louder to compensate for the further distance from the seating area.

Good luck!

It's not that monopoles are "needed" due to distance, just that monopoles surrounds can be distracting when placed too close. Hence the recommendation for more diffuse (bipole/dipole) speakers; you don't have a direct firing speaker shouting into one of your ears from a couple of feet away.

In your new set-up, you'll be fine with your current bipoles at 8.5 feet away from the centre seat; might even be better to continue using them, considering there will be listeners on either side of the centre seat who will end up closer to one of the surround speakers.
