Monster Garages unite

Hey folks, just wondering who else is / has built out a dedicated HT in a garage? I'm pretty sure there's at least one low profile member here who has one ;-) Anyone else? I see tons of posts on basement conversions, but not many garages (I know, building code issues - I still have space for 2 cars, so I'm OK re: code). Any other non-traditional spaces?

The only garage conversion that I've noticed was totally half-as*ed and lame, so you wouldnt want to try to learn anything from that effort. ;-)
One of the finest theaters and threads for that matter to grace the AVS site was built in a garage. Head on over to Sandmans thread and try not to let your jaw hit the ground!

btw...Your theater plans look great Brad.
I did my theater in half of a two-car garage. The room is ~15' X 20'.

There are a couple of problems with my theater, first being, I only have one AC register in the room so it gets warm. I am going to install a mini-split come this spring. The other problem is that I didn't do any acoustical isolation. This is not a problem as long as the wife and I are watching a movie together. In my defense, I built this room before I found this website, at the time I didn't realize how much went into a theater. I have since installed acoustical treatments on all the walls that has helped the acoustical properties of the room quit a bit

This photo is a 2.35:1 scope screen masked for 1.33:1. You can see other photos of my theater in my gallery.

I think just about every post in this thread has referred to that. ;-)

Yeah, I guess SandmanX is doing alright, given his limited resources, creativity and skills

Wow must have been a pretty big two car garage! Mine is going to be half a 4 car garage, and after framing and wall treatments, I'll have about 17.5' x 22.5'.

You theater looks great...but why are you hiding your 2.35:1 screen? Any obstacles you had to get past when building in your garage? The ones I'm battling right now are (1) leaky concrete block back wall, and (2) no ceiling joists.

Yeah, I'm not thinking we need to be holding a bake sale for him.

The actual dimensions before wall treatments are 19'7" X 14'7" (the other side of the garage is ~20' X 10'.) I used OC703 1" for the entire screen wall and 44" up on side and back walls, so you can subtract a couple of inches.

The entire garage was 2X4 framed on a 6†footing along with a drywall ceiling. All I had to do was put up a dividing wall down the middle and a false wall over the garage door. I didn't want to change the look of the house from the outside.

I use the curtains for masking so I don’t see the black pillars in 4X3 and 16X9. I run a constant height setup with a Prismasonic anamorphic lens. My screen is 118†X 50â€. When I watch a 2.35 movie the curtain are opened all the way.

Thanks Willy - how well has the CIH setup worked for you? Is it pretty turnkey once you got it all worked out, or manual intervention required to switch aspect ratios? And how much of an investment is it to get a CIH setup? I guess I should really be asking this in the CIH forum...just curious if I want to dive into that forum and not come for air for a while (lenses, scalers, masking options, rethinking lumens vs. screen size, etc.)?

Lens - Prismasonic H1200M - MSRP $2070.00 They use to have a DIY H600M for a lot lot less.

Scaler - iScan HD+ MSRP for "B" stock $999.00. I have a "B" stock unit and it has worked great for a year now.

Screen - Carada 128" BW - MSRP $865.00 - with shipping and the BW screen

I use a Harmony 880 remote and the only thing I have to do is press a button to setup the proper AR

You could go CH with just a lens to start. Most PJ's today will do the 2.35 stretch and make a 2.35 screen.

The only thing is, once you go CH 2.35 you will never go back.
