The latest on what the next generation of 8-VSB OTA receivers will look like.
http://www.tvtechnology.com/newsroom/products.shtml

Key quotes...

"Roughly speaking, for every 1 Mbps that you transmit in the robust channel you give up about 2 Mbps in the normal channel," said Richard Lewis, senior vice president of Research and Technology, Zenith Electronics.

and...

Officials from Zenith and NxtWave said that the technology would be ready for consumers within 12 to 18 months after approval by the ATSC.

And they might add, approval by the FCC, or is that the same thing as ATSC approval. Since they are planning on showing a finished proposal by May of 2002 and allowing for six months for the approvals that puts the beginning of production at 18 to 24 months past next May or in the range of November of 2003 to May of 2004.

No delays here. And when they deliver what do we have? Mobile and datacasting possibilities and more expensive receivers with a big question mark about truncated HDTV?

I started a discussion of this on the HDTV Programming forum nearly exactly the same time as Bob put this here. Please see this thread . What Bob is describing here is what OTA receivers could look like if Zenith's proposal is selected by a committee evaluating several proposals. This could indeed be a threat to HDTV and IMHO deserves some discussion.

Gentlemen,

Let us not forget the proposals to "Fix" the training signal.

This fix takes nothing away from bandwidth.(I think)

And improves reception

(Quote)

Broadcom and Oren proposed variations on improving the effectiveness of the training sequences for improved equalizer performance in the receiver. These two companies have been working together and may submit a combined proposal.

(end Quote)

These are only Proposals
