I'm looking for an AVR that delivers "real" 120-150 watts/channel (all channels driven) for the best price. I'm trying to drive an HT set of 7, inefficient speakers. Is there an AVR that stands out as a power per dollar leader?

Nirvana,

How much are you looking to spend or how much can you afford to go?

The NAD T773 will do it but they run around $1700 list though I'm sure you can get one for about $1400-1500.

If you can get by the 120-150 watts part, then Outlaw 7 channel receiver coming is rated at 65 wpc for all channels driven(all 7). If your budget is more then the Denon 4802R is good as is the 5803.

Another option is seperates like the Outlaw combo for $1500 which includes and external amp.

Check out the AVR 7200, measured 143W/CH all channels driven in Sound & Vision review last June. It is now discontinued but can be found for about $800 but is scarce, the last time i checked..

www.onecall.com had some inventory...

This is actually for a friend who was looking for something that streets for $1000 or less.

Wow! So the AVR 7200 actually outperforms its published 100w/channel spec? That just might be the ticket. Is this typical of HK receivers?

That kind of performance would be typical of both H/K and NAD - their stated specs are a minimum of what you could expect.

The Harman/Kardon AVRs typically exceed their published specs by a significant margin, as they are designed for all channels driven, high current, wide bandwidth. I have owned all of the major brand AVRs including Elite, Denon, Onkyo, Yamaha but I always come back to the HK for its superb sound quality and honest disclosure for specifications. If possible go and listen to an HK AVR with your target loudspeakers, note its depth and clarity at low and high volume levels..

Thanks everyone for your input. I will investigate the HK receivers more. The new DPR 2005 looks very attractive but is on the expensive side. I personally have experience with a Panasonic XR-45 and have high expectations for what HK can do with a digital amp.

F355,

Realistically, about 75-80 wpc, all channels driven, maybe less.

I Would Add ROTEL to this List..

In Fact it's quite easy to check....

compare the power comsuption regarding the Power output rated ...

My AVR 630 is said to be 7*75 Watts

it should have a power consumption of at least 525 Watts... it's real power consumption is 1080 Watts...

An Amplifier said to output 140 W* 7 with a power consumption of 400 Watts won't be able to reach it's specs... (max 57 Watts per channel with all channels used simultaneously)
