Motorola DCT-62xx Info

704 Views 12 Replies 6 Participants Last post by  bruce73
Hi,

I just found this forum while searching for info on the Motorola DCT-62xx.

I just got a Motorola DCT-62xx for HDTV.

I was wondering if anyone had any good resources for using it? Forum posts, websites, software, documents, etc.

I am looking for info on hooking it to a PC and other devices via either Firewire (1394), USB, Ethernet, etc. as well as any other interesting things that can be done with it (i.e. hacks, secret codes, upgrades, hardware upgrades, etc.)

Thanks

You'll probably find everything you need in the HDTV Recorders section, specifically this thread: http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/showthread.php?t=558602

There's also a great Firewire thread stuck to the top of that section: http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/showthread.php?t=403695

Welcome to AVS!
If you are renting it, don't even think about hacking or modding it.
Just started researching channel changing/recording via firewire from a 6200 to my just-ordered-yet-to-be-setup HTPC and found this which might be of interest to you.
Thanks for your help so far. I got the box to stream via firewire to VLC just fine. I did notice though that one of the Motorola devices that installs says it cannot start, I believe it was the AV/C Panel device. Is this normal?

Also I found how to get to the diagnostics menu by turning the unit off and hitting select twice.

Does anyone know of any more secret codes? Or how to get to the initial startup screen like the Motorola manual mentions where you can set 4:3/16:9 or 1080i, etc.?

I hooked my computer to the ethernet port on the 62xx. It is active, at least partially. My computer sees a connection but cannot find an IP. Is there any way to get this active or hook it to a home network to stream shows or log into the unit?

The unit has 2 sets of AV inputs (one front/one back). How do you access these if you hook a device to them? Is there a specific channel?

It looks as if my USB ports are disabled, they have have power, but I can get them to do anything. Has anyone found any uses for them at all?

Does this unit accept an external hard drive via either firewire or usb to become a DVR since there is no drive installed inside?

Thanks again!

In a nutshell, the active functions of the unit are at the whim of the cable company. I have the DVR version of the box and the AV ports are not active.

You can't connect a drive to a box that isn't a DVR to begin with.

See the threads I gave you for more information.
None of the cableco's have activated AV input at this time.

For user settings, turn the unit off, then hit MENU.
Here's the best resource I know of:

In particular, read the "Click Here for the DCTHDFAQ in its original format" link.

The reason I asked is because I saw this quote on one of motorola's web sites:

"The DCT6200 offers a range of standard digital and analog interfaces, which facilitate consumer interaction in multiple DTV and IP interface configurations. The DCT6200 includes an MPEG encoder, making the set-top "PVR-capable" with the addition of an external 1394 hard disk drive. These enhancements provide an even more compelling, easy-to-use, HDTV and PVR experience for the cable customer."

(Since the site would not let me put the URL in the post until I have 5 posts, the URL where I found it is in the post's title.)

Also does anyone have any preference to whether 1080i or 720p is better? Does more lines of resolution or progessive/interlaced give a better picture?

Thanks for everyone's help.

Rule of thumb, AFAIK, is that it's best for the output to match the native resolution of your TV (the fewer conversions the better). It's also generally said that 720p handles fast motion (e.g. sports) better than 1080i, although on my 50" DLP I honestly can see no difference.

That being said, just to save you some grief, the 6200 does not support 720p over component (it does over DVI).

Sure it does. I'm watching it using 720p right now.

DaveFi: it doesn't with my Sam HLP-5063 and it is a known issue that Motorola and Samsung don't play nice together at 720p over component (I had the same problem with the Motorola MOXI box). Sorry, I should have qualified; I stand corrected.
