Hi all,

got my 1208 mounted and almost done with the setup. I still plan on installing the gear in the wall where the rack is located.

New funiture is coming as well. Here are a few pics until then.

BTW, I have a question, is it possible to convert the 1208/2 into a 1208s?

I notice my setup manual has better features on the 1208s than my 1208/2 like seagull, fine and coarse convergence etc..

Sorry for the spots in the pics, the baby must have got the lense dirty, lol.

Yes, but you would need a 1208s parts chasis to do it.

Hi James,

I hope everything went well with your setup. As to the question of converting your 1208/2 to a 1208s, consider yourself LUCKY you don't have a 1208s. While the 1208s might be "a little " better than the 1208/2, it uses the Sony tubes that ARE NO LONGER MADE OR AVAILABLE, making the 1208s worth much less than it should be if tubes were available.

Thanks guys for the response! I noticed that some 1208s models used MEC tubes but the main reason I ask about the conversion is because the 1208s has more features. I thought it was as simple as swapping out the convergence board and updating the software if possible or something along those lines. It just seems to me that the 1208s would dial in better than the 1208/2 with the extra features.

Bruce, the setup has gone well. Learning something new every day and each day it gets better! I just figured out powerstrip yesterday a little better and was able to use a better resolution than I had previously.

I purchased TT 1.5 but returned it before the trial period was up because I felt that what I have works just fine. Powerstrip and PowerDVD. Maybe as I continue to learn I might purchase it permanently once I figure out what I can and cannot do with my current setup.

Just got finished watching "Day after tomorrow" man what a blast this big screen is, I almost ducked a few times when those cars and buses started flying, lol.

The new TT-2.0 is supposed to have better picture quality, especially with the Nividia 5700/5950 display cards. It also has a numver of new features.

So what is you're final screen size?

1208s (2nd to last version) = Sony Tubes

1208s/2 (last version) = Newer PT-18/P16 MEC tubes where your 1208 used 180DVBs.

I am prertty sure it would take at least a computer, a convergence tray and probably one or two other boards to pull it off. Some folks have sucessfully transplanted MEC tubes in the 808s Graphics which also use Sony tubes so it might be an option to find a 1208s chassis and transfer your tubes. Never tried it myself though.

Don't forget that you would also have to change the neck board.

This isn't exactly correct because i have bought these tubes a week ago, and my supplier says there isn't a problem getting them they are just a little more expensive than earlier.

Bruce, 1280 x 768... you just curious or do ya have some suggestions?
I have same config. PS (latest version), PDVD 4.0, and Barco 1208/2 using 1280X768.

Curious as to why that res was selected, did you tweak timings in PS.

Also for reference what contract/brightness are you using? I'm at 50/60 respectively.

I'm going to try some alternate timings - hopefully Sunday.

What I meant was that the tubes are no longer available from the manufacturer. There are ALWAYS tubes available somewhere in the world for a price, but there's no guarantee that they will be available when you need them, if at all.

btw- Is your supplier in Europe? There are no suppliers here in the U.S. that I'm aware of. Sometimes you might see them on Ebay if you're lucky.

Onlink,

I got the settings from the scan rate chart viewable from the PSI on-line technical support menu.

I used 1280 x 960 but I could not get my 16:9 screen to fill because I no longer had TT which would expand the picture and fill the screen. But, being that 1280x960 is a 4:3 setting, I noticed the people or football players would have short legs kinda like midgets (no offense to midgets but to the best of my knowledge none of them play in the NFL).

The other option I tried was to use the 1280 x 960 and expand the picture in the PDVD ( by selecting 1.85:1 or 2.35:1) but then you loose the aspect ratio and that defeats the whole purpose of having the 16:9 screen.

When viewing a DVD with 2.35:1 I can move my picture up to the top of the screen with the Extron 302 and raise the electric screen since the width is constant. Complete fill of screen in 1.85:1 or 2.35:1

On the C&B settings I adjust the Extron signal level to +127 and 68/73 on the PJ. I like my screen bright and vivid plus you have to remember that its a 133" diag screen. Using 60/60 works just fine as well but the little extra gives me that extra punch. The timing and other settings on the Power Strip I have not used yet because I have not clue what they are there for as of this writing. These are just my observations and I still consider myself a relative newbie.

As always I am open to suggestions, criticisms and comments. Its just a hobby.

James,

960 is kinda high. You would probably get a sharper looking picture at 720. Be careful about shifting the picture on the tube face, since you sure DON'T want to create a wear pattern where the wear line on the bottom of the picture would run through the center of the tube face.

Bruce,

Wen I switched to the 1280 X 768 the picture was the nest I have seen, it just came alive and was nice and sharp. The 1280 x 960 was not as sharp for sure plus as stated I could not expand it properly. So are you saying by creating a custom size of 1280 x 720 it might look sharper than the 1280 x 768? Hmm, I'll give that a try tonight. Does this fill the height more or less that the 768? Not sure how that stuff works yet.

I'll have to process what you said about shifting the picture, my memory is running a little low right now, I might have to reboot the brain.

B. Hegelstad, Very nice.

When they say a little more how much is that, lol?

I got a quote for new tubes from VDC for the 1208/2 and they are $499.00 a pop for the 180VBS or whatever the part number was. They did not say that these were rebuilds and when I asked, I asked for new tubes. Of course this is after you send them the old tubes so they can remove something off of them but I cannot remember what is was.

They are now about 25% more expensive than earlier and about three times the price you got from VDC on the 180DVB22 :(
