Mounting a plasma on masonite.

595 Views 5 Replies 5 Participants Last post by  SoSo
It turns out the wall where I want to mount the plasma is steel mesh backed masonite. I have the 65" panasonic which weighs almost 200 pounds.

My contractor thinks that masonite can support it. Anyone in the forum care to offer their opinion?

Is it hollow behind the masonite? If so, look into a large guage toggle bolt. I would apply a threadlock sealent to the threads to ensure they (toggle portion) do not back off. 3M makes an excellent threadlock.
Masonite is very flaky, could rip/tear and give no support at all. I would use a metal plate to spread the tension and prevent tearing.
It is hollow. My main concern is the pull out resistance of the anchors. Secondarily I worry about the whole wall coming down. I'm not sure how it is fixed to the exterior brick.

What I am hearing is that masonite may be strong but it isn't without peril.

200 pounds is a lot of worry!

If you can get thru to the brick wall, you might want to use a masonry bit, followed by lead anchors into the brick, with bolts long enough to go thru the masonry. That way the brick will carry the load. And since it would be a shear load, instead of a pull, it might work just fine.

But I'm no engineer, so if this is out-of-bounds, someone jump in and set it straight!
Maybe you should consider buying some nice plasma furniture instead of wall mount.
