I recently purchased the seats for my theater. Just wondering how everyone is mounting these. My riser is 2x6 joists 12" apart, and I was thinking of covering it with two layers of 1/2" MDF. If I use coarse lag screws, will they pull out over time? Secondly, the floor level seats will be on OSB subfloor, and then concrete....any suggestions?

Hydraboss,

"Real" movie theater seats require an extremely solid anchorage in order to resist working loose as a result of "rocking" force (I think the correct name for this is "torsional" force, but I'm not an physical or mechanical engineer...). So, you need to build some solid "2 by" blocking into your riser where you seats will be bolted (or lag screwed) down.

For the seating that is to be secured to the subfloor with concrete beneath - you should use a concrete anchor (like a lead sleeve) and bolts long enough to make it into the anchor. You'd need to drill a hole through the subfloor, and then switch drills to a hammer drill with a masonary bit to bore the appropriate size hole in the concrete.

You would want to wait until the carpet is in place before drilling any holes, or you will likely not be able to find the holes after the carpet and padding go in. Just cut a small "X" in the carpet where you need to drill a hole so that you don't end up creating a "run" in the carpet (really only applies to a continuous loop carpet - a cut pile won't "run").

Good luck,

Dwight
