I have just gotten me a Laserdisc player because of the movies that only are availeble on that format.

I am now wondering on what movies that only are on Laserdisc (and not DVD)

The ones I know of now is:

Song of the South

The Alamo (the directors cut)

Star Wars (the original movies)

Schindler's List

Lion King (till 10/2003)

There are many many more though...

Dragonslayer won't be an issue much longer.

Raiders of the Lost Ark trilogy (soon on DVD)

Robin Hood: Men in Tights (one of my favorites)

The problem for me is that the picture quality of Laserdisc is nowhere near DVD. Even though I own the original Star Wars on LaserDisc, it's painful to watch such a poor quality version. At least it's better than VHS, but I'd really like to have the 3 original Star Wars movies on DVD.

The Wind and the Lion (hopefully Jan 04)

Adventures of Robin Hood (Flynn, soon)

Most of the other good Errol Flynn movies (Captain Blood, Seahawk)

Flinstones 1st Season

About half the Abbot & Costello horroe movie collection

I've considered buying an LD player for:

Star Wars

Name of the Rose

WB cartoons (beginning to appear on DVD)

2001: a space odyssey (Criterion)

Blade Runner (Criterion)

Actually, there are a lot of titles that are out on DVD but I would like to have the Criterion LD versions of.

There are hundreds of films on LD that are not on DVD. A small sample from my collection:

TOP HATS

GUNGA DIN

THEY DIED WITH THEIR BOOTS ON

GIRL CRAZY

ROBINSON CRUSOE ON MARS

THE JAZZ SINGER (Jolson)

STRIKE UP THE BAND

AMERICANIZED WIFE

WHAT EVER HAPPENED TO BABY JANE?

RED DUST

BOOM TOWN

FIRE IN THE SKY

RUGGLES OF THE RED GAP

SAMSON AND DELILAH

48th PARALLEL

THE GREAT McGINTY

and the STAR WARS Trilogy in a pear tree.

Geez...there are more than a 1000, I would guess. Certainly more than 500. Can you say King Kong? The complete Val Lewton? All five Thin Man films? And don't forget the great laserdiscs of Eddie Cantor, Wheeler and Woolsey, and Astaire/Rodgers. I would expect 99.99% to eventually find a way to dvd (knock on wood). Even my Singapore-only laserdisc of "Dreamchild" (a film based on the not so very normal love that Lewis Carrol had for an 8 year old Alice) may eventually find its way to dvd. No, I'm not a pedophile. I also own Saving Private Ryan though I DO NOT approve of war. And my Indiana Jones laserdiscs are big faves...but I don't approve of grave robbing either!

SCREAM Director's Cut (in DTS too!)

RANSOM (out on DVD, but the LD has 20 minutes extra footage)

RETURN OF THE LIVING DEAD (Out on DVD only in an R-Rated version; the LD is uncut)

GREYSTOKE: Legend of Tarzan

FROM BEYOND

THE SHADOW (on DVD full-frame, the LD is letterboxed and also released in DTS!)

DRACULA HAS RISEN FROM THE GRAVE (Hammer)

EVIL OF FRANKENSTEIN (Hammer)

CURSE OF THE WEREWOLF (Hammer)

And many, many, many more.

It should be noted that LD picture quality is VERY dependent on the player. High end players (such as the expensive HLD-X9) can display PQ as good as (sometimes even better) than some DVDs. Other players will display descendingly lesser results.

Of course, the trend is COMPLETELY in DVD's favor. The number of titles available on LD but not DVD is constantly shrinking and will continue to do so, whereas the number of titles available on DVD that will NEVER be available on LD (since it's a dead format) is constantly INCREASING, and will obviously eventually number in the thousands.

Didn't we do this a while back?????????

Anyway, my memory isn't like it used to be:

Class Action

Cocoon ---------- ? DVD ?

A Far Off Place ----------- ? DVD ?

George Stevens: D-Day to Berlin

The Gods Must Be Crazy >>>>>>> Not what you think........ amazing!!!!

The Gods Must Be Crazy II

Lorenzo's Oil >>>>>> Unbelieveable and based on a true story!

Meet Me In St. Louis ------------- ? DVD ?

Night Train To Munich >>>>>>>>>> A Classic!

Panic In The Streets

Shining Through

State Fair >>>>>> (Ann Margret)

Waterloo Bridge ----------- DVD?

The Wonderful World of the Brothers Grimm

Around The World In Eighty Days

and if you have any interest in the movie whatsoever, the audio commentary on the Criterion laserdisc of "Singin In The Rain" by Ron Haver is very, very interesting and full of tidbits about the movie and the stars. Much better than the DVD commentary.

Whats cut on the Return of the Living Dead DVD I have both the DVD and the LD, whats missing?
Clemons' statement is quite misleading. He is referring to a PAL LD that has scenes not in the theatrical version of the film, NOT the Image LD (or the Japanese import, for that matter). The DVD is the full theatrical version (contrary to what Clemons implies), so you're not missing anything.

Clemons' (il)logic is interesting. A non-NTSC LD version of the film has more footage, therefore he claims the DVD doesn't exist (he needs to reread the title of the thread).
