Moving Samsung DLP - need some advice

1425 Views 8 Replies 8 Participants Last post by  MikeAlletto
Hello

I'm looking for some advice on moving my Samsung HLP4674W about 4.5 hours by car (Volvo wagon). I believe I have enough room (from taking measurements) to stand the unit upright in the back of the car, as I would prefer, however I'm concerned about what impact, if any, movement/bumping around (as one would experience during normal driving) will have on a DLP unit. Is this terribly bad for the television? Are there any internal moving parts that could experience damage? And most importantly, is it at all possible to experience a loss of picture quality as a result of such a move?

I conducted a search and found very few threads specifically related to moving a DLP. I'd greatly appreciate any help.

Thank You

There shouldn't be much risk with moving the set as long as it is kept upright. I really don't understand why people worry about moving sets. As long as they are kept upright--as most are when they are initially shipped--you should have no problems. Remember, before you got your set, it was in the back of a truck being shipped to a retailer.
If you have room I'd lay a few towels down to set the TV on to quell the vibrations, and of course have it tied down or situated in some way so it can't tip over. If you do those things you should be good to go.
I kept the original packaging for my Samsung DLP, in case I ever have to move it in the future.

I did the same thing on my Sony.

Original packing is by far the best way to go. But if you're like me, you can't justify keeping a box around the house that's large enough to house a homeless family

Get some packer's blankets if you can - the thick quilted kind, and wrap it up as much as you can. If you can't use those, get some household blankets and wrap it with those. Support it so it doesn't slide or tip.

Pay particular attention to the front projector screen. Don't allow ANYTHING to rub against it during the trip or you'll likely ruin it

I wonder if anyone has moved it and had a horrible experience?!? Or, even those who wrote here, how did the move go?!?

I'm planning on giving my 5063w DLP to my sister who lives in chicago (I live in St.Louis) and wouldn't want to hear the crash of little mirrors while driving over the rough I-55. My first DLP when it was being delivered from the store, as they walked up the stairs, i heard the crashes of the mirrors and needless to say, they had to leave with it.

But packed in a carton isolated against vibration by chunks of expanded foam. Without that, there is a real risk of wrecking the critical mirror alignments. You need to replace the foam with equivalent, such as several blankets sitting on foamboard or multiple layers of cardboard and make sure it is braced to keep it upright.

Sure but the insides are NOT wrapped or packed in anyways. The foam and box keeps the outside of the case from bumping around and cushions direct blows but doesn't stop the entire box with tv in it from getting rattled. Remember these have been carried by forklifts, people, trains, and trucks before they even get to the store that you buy them from.

Yes it should be braced so it doesn't move around and yes I would still put blankets on and/or around it, and yeah I wouldn't go driving like a mad man, but this isn't an egg.
