MPC Home Cinema Black Bars All Around

I'm not sure what caused this to happen, but I noticed now when I play any 720p .MKV file in MPC-HC I get black bars on the side now in full screen. The only way to fix it is to right click and go to Pan & Scan, zoom to widescreen. It never did this before and it is not saving this setting. Maybe it has something to do with my output settings? Here's what it looks like. Res is 1680 x 1050. black-bars.jpg is shrunk down.

If using an ATI graphics card do you have the Overscan compensation slider set to 0 in CCC?
I do have an ATI card. I didn't change any settings in there. Where is Overscan compensation in the CCC?
That isn't an underscan issue in the CCC. The picture is being displayed at pixel for pixel. The source is 1280 x 720 and that's how much it fills your screen from a 1680 x 1050 resolution.

2 possible issues:

1) You have GPU upscaling in your CCC turned off. Make sure it is on and set to 'Keep aspect ratio'.

2) I've never seen Haali renderer used in MPC-HC. Try VMR9 (renderless). It's possible a setting exists in wherever the Haali renderer options would be that says just-scan or pixel to pixel instead of upscaling to your resolution.
CCC/advanced mode/monitor properties/adjustments (IIRC) Set overscan slider to 0

edit Simultaneous post with jr. If its not overscan, then what he said
I enabled GPU scalling and selected maintain aspect ratio. Didn't seem to help. Also selected VMR9 (renderless) in output.

Still can't find the overscan in CCC.
Since your display has a 16:10 aspect ratio and your source has a 16:9 aspect ratio if you maintaing aspect ratio you will most likely get a black bar on the top and bottom of the display.

You're not going to see it because you aren't using a device (DLP, projector) that CCC would see as requiring underscanning.

Do a reboot after making those changes just in case.

Go to MPC-HC settings and click on playback. There is a section called output (not the output tab) to the right. It has an auto-zoom feature. Is this turned on and at 100%?
What version of CCC? Pre version 8.xx (cant remember exactly) there was no slider but there was a picture size/position adjustment. What is the output resolution of your PC? PC specs?

Also try right clicking while video is playing and make sure Video Frame is set to Normal Size.

You can also try turning off VMR9 mixer mode under 'Output' options as that's off by default.

Have you looked at the image? His problem is he has black bars on the sides of the movie.

Yes I saw that which I was suggesting that he not try maintaiing aspect ratio.

I agree with you that since the OP is apparently not using a TV interface such as Component. DVI or HDMI that the Overscan compensation slider is not available to him in the CCC
I was able to test this when I got home. It is the Haali Renderer causing the pixel for pixel display. When you change the filter to VMR9 you have to close and reopen MPC-HC for it to take effect.

Just got home and turned on my PC, tried it again and still same problem. I turned auto-zoom on to 100%, restarted MPC-HC, nothing, tried auto-fit, nothing.

Set to normal.

Tried VMR9 (windowed), VMR9 (renderless), and regular system default. Restarting MPC-HC in between each. Nothing worked. Still got black bars on the sides. Yes I know black bars will be on the top and bottom.

See above response.

Thanks for all the help!

Well then you're screwed

Try loading a restore point when you know it was working. If that doesn't work, try deleting the MPC-HC folder and extracting it again, this way every setting will be back to default, and uninstall the haali splitter (if you installed it). Do not reinstall Haali until you've tested MPC-HC first to see if it works. It has its own internal mkv splitter.

To verify, this is happening on any 720p video and you're not just testing this on the one movie you pictured above?

And you're always going to full-screen mode when testing, right?

Didn't try the restore point yet, but I did uninstall haali splitter and deleted MPC-HC, and redownloaded the latest from the website. Still getting the same thing. Tried a bunch of other 720p .MKV files and it's no different. Yep this is in full screen mode. It seems like these is a bug with MPC-HC.

Is your PC desktop and the resolution you are outputting to your display both set at 1680x1050?

If you are not trying to play a movie does your PC desktop display at full screen?
Hello. I had the same problem. Mine was solved using a setting "touch picture from inside". Hope it will help. Robert.
Have you tried another media player like VLC to see if it has the same issue?

Yes, the bars on the side only happens when I full screen in MPC-HC. My regular Windows desktop goes full screen with of course no black bars.

Where is this setting located?

VLC works as it should and zooms to widescreen without having to mess with settings. No black bars on the sides, just the top and bottom which is correct.
