Are there quality differences between software and hardware MPEG-2? As in, will an MPEG-2 decoder board improve picture quality, or just performance? How about the hardware decoding of a stand-alone player vs. PC decoding? Will a stand-alone with SDI to the htpc be better than software/hardware decoding in the HTPC?
Also, can anyone give any hints on how to test a players decoding capabilities? Like when testing for de-interlacing, look for i.e. stairs on straight lines.
