2 Newbie questions.

just got :

pentium4 1.5GHz

ATI 32MB AGP Radeon

Soundblaster Live

Ravisent CinePlayer DVD software

Q1:

===

i think that using the Cineplayer for DVD playback does software decoding only. would it be better to use the ATI hardware decoding instead? how do i do that? i do not have any ATI software (other than the card driver).

what are the pros / cons?

Q2:

===

how can i do a screen capture of a DVD movie?

NOTE: for now, all i care to do is use my 22" PC Monitor for playback (not true HTPC).

thanks!

PS: forgot to mention: using Windows 2000 - in case it makes a difference

if you do not know the specific equipment i have to make a sensible comparison, how about some general comments / observations / recommendations regarding SOFTWARE vs HARDWARE mpeg decoding in general that may apply to me?

thks!

The 2 HW assist on the Radeon is iDCT and HWMC. I believe iDCT is computational and should be the same across the board, so HW/SW shouldn't make a difference.

Some people prefer software decoding and not using HWMC on the Radeon. I haven't seen a debate on this for the longest time, so either it's a dead issue now, or it's an accepted fact http://www.avsforum.com/ubb/smile.gif .

As to your 2nd question, have no idea since I never take a snapshot.
