I'm working on a project to capture AV streams. (cough)

If I have a file containing mpeg2 data from a "source", what utils are there to analyse the contents. I will not know their exact nature.

It may be a file containing a transport stream, PES's, or maybe full HD AV, and probably program guide packets. Or maybe it'll be full of garbage.

Is there a utilitity to sort this out, or does it take skills like a member here might have?

It would be hard to tell without seeing the data. If you can't get the elecard mpeg2 to play to view it try looking at it with a hex editor.

If you pull it up in a hex editor and see lots of "00 00 01 C0" (audio header) and "00 00 01 E0" (video header) then your are probably looking at some type of valid data. It is fairly easy to take the data apart in a program, a lot harder to get them back together in a format that an editing program will recognize. Reformatting the data so that player programs can use it with it is much easier.
