Multichannel SACD Questions re: HDMI

4991 Views 8 Replies 6 Participants Last post by  Panson
I feel like my research has answered this first question, but I am having cognitive dissonance because it doesn't seem to make sense to me. And now I'm thinking myself into circles...

1. Can multichannel SACDs only be played back in multichannel if the player is outputting via HDMI?

What confuses me is that every single 'high end' dedicated CD/SACD player I'm looking at, NONE of them have HDMI outs, only analog outs and optical/coax digital outs (which I keep reading don't support multichannel "due to copyright issues")

2. And so, this leads me to a different question. IF the player bitstreams everything via HDMI to a receiver, is it not the receiver that is actually doing the digital to audio conversion? Therefore, theoretically, would any, CD/SACD player be sufficient if you have are happy with the DAC on your receiver?

Thank you

The answer to your first question, is not necessarily. Some universal players, mostly Oppo, have multichannel analog outputs that can be used with SACD, but generally your are limited to universal players, not boutique hi end SACD players which are just 2 channel. In that regard, the only game in town is the Sony X800m2 or Sony X1100es unless you pay out the nose for a used oppo. There was a Yamaha BD player out there that according the the Yamaha site, is discontinued, but you might be able to find someone with some in stock. You are correct about optical and coax, if you play an sacd from those outputs, you are getting the CD layer, not the SACD layer.

On your second question, yes. Any player will do, it's up to your receiver to decode HDMI and supply the digital analog conversion. For new players, there are only two 'universal players, the aforementioned Sonys. They can both play DVD-A and SACD. There are some lesser Sony Blu Ray players , sub 100 bucks, that can also play SACD, but they are not universal and cannot play DVD-A. For example the Sony BDP-S6700 can play SACD and crutchfield has them for 98 bucks.

Edit: one note on receivers. Not all receivers do direct DSD to analog decoding and in the HDMI handshake with the player, the player will recognize this and the player will output PCM 88/24 or 176/24, but it is still multichannel. For example my anthem cannot do DSD decoding. I doubt you'd notice as 88/24 or 176/24 are still hi rez and very good formats.

Yes. Get one of the players Glangford mentioned, as that will open you up to some titles that may be only available used on DVD-A.

I looked at a bunch of expensive players at Crutchfield. Wow, what rip offs is all I have to say.

I used a Marantz DV-6400 with 5.1 analog outputs for years and loved the way it sounded. That being said, when I upgraded my receiver to a Denon AVR-4400, it no longer had a 5.1 analog input. So I ended using a Sony UHD player for SACDs through a HDMI. It sounded a lot better than my Marantz.

That's probably because Audyssey isn't applied to the analog input(I'm pretty sure), but is to the HDMI input. Your bass, at the very least, probably sounded better with Audyssey.

I should have mentioned that was the very reason it sounded better. The adjustments on the DV6400 were very limited.

One of the biggest benefits was getting rid of a massive amount of cabling coming from my analog output also.

I left off one sony player from the list. The UBP-X700, which plays SACD, not DVD-A. It's currently 198 bucks at crutchfield. It has a bit smaller form factor than the X-800 or X1100es players. The UBP-X700 is being replaced with the UBP-X700/M, which adds dolby vision to 4k discs and costs 249, basically the same as the X800.

If you can find a lightly used Sony XA5400 player it has both coaxial and hdmi out...I use the hdmi out for sacd. The Sony automatically knew to send out sacd as pcm to my datasat rs20. The Sony replaced an Esoteric dedicated cd transport and is pretty decent.

Same as previous UBP-X700. HDMI cable is now added.
