Have 3 5040's, varying capacities, hard wire networked in my home. Couldn't live without 'em, etc etc. My older son, graduate student at George Washington in DC, is too busy to catch the shows he's interested in... and has asked for a Replay for Christmas. I can't find a 5040 at any sort of reasonable price... don't particularly feel like paying close to $200 for a used one. Am now thinking about buying (shudder) a refurb Tivo 80 hour machine for $99 from their website. Does ANYONE have a 5040 for sale for a semi-reasonable price?? Help!!

...and get a 55xx to replace the 5k that you gave him.

And with all the partying, drugs and sex, when does a grad student have any time to watch television?

5504's are still on their site (new and refurb)

Pretty dumb to buy a Tivo instead of a 5500 in any case. A crippled 5000 is still light-years away from a Tivo even with the Tivo vaporware.

Maybe Tivo people have infiltrated them like Iraqi insurgents in the Iraqi Armed Forces.

Get him a 5504 and assign him the "project" of enabling IVS/CA via WiRNS. After all, he is a Grad student so he should have above average problem-solving abilities.:D

...'course the always the matter of the lifetime membership I currently enjoy. Guess I can kiss that goodbye if I move up....

That's where I bought mine from recently (although I think I paid 112 - 50 instead of 105 - 50). Do it. Now. You won't regret it.

Well the $50 rebate is contingent on the the activation of new ReplayTV service--so you can't have all your cake and eat it with this deal--I'd gladly forgo the rebate if replay will honour my existing lifetime replay service.

Still even at a full $105--that seems very cheap--I think I paid $349 for my Showstopper...

Replay...well let's say Digital Video Recording...has completely transformed my relationship with broadcast TV. When I spent a month in Houston looking after my mom (recovering from major surgery) I could hardly stand watching TV the old way--commercials, being subject to broadcast scheduling, not being able to fast forward through the boring bits (which is most of it) of CourtTV's live trials--it's was just awful :)

Subpar, you should get the replay (5504, make the kid skip commercials tell him in "your day" you had NO way to avoid the commercials). Unless you want to IVS with him the 5504 should do the trick. I'd even say to register it to yourself and get the "multiple unit" discount on pricing. =)

That's not great advice. The agreement stipulates all ReplayTV units to be in the same house.

Unless DNNA is braiindead they compare--at least occasionally manually--compare the guide zip codes/provider to thwart this sort of thing.

Who knows what it would get ya. A canceled lifetime, maybe let you slide if you back-pay all the months from $7 to $13, whatever. Pull a misfortune out of the hat.

Very worst: they sue you, or send legal papers, or try to fine you

Worst I'd think would happen: Lose lifetime, ask back-pay

Best I'd think would happen: it works, but they call people on it when they do scans and stop it

Very Best: works fine indefinitely, no one asks

Hmm... looking at the possibilities outlined above, it may be something to try. Can't get rid of that may not though.
