Must-Have PS3 Titles Coming Soon, Sony Exec Says

LOS ANGELES (Reuters) - This is the year that video game makers will deliver the must-have titles needed to drive sales of Sony Corp.'s new PlayStation 3, the executive in charge of the Japanese electronic conglomerate's U.S. console business said on Thursday.

Sony devotees have been reluctant to spend the $600-plus needed to buy the high-end PS3due to its high price and the lack of games offered exclusively for the new systemand sales have lagged Nintendo Co. Ltd.'s Wii and Microsoft Corp.'s Xbox 360.

"The content message will be addressed very nicely this year," said Jack Tretton, president and chief executive officer of Sony Computer Entertainment America.

For this fiscal year ending March 31, users can expect more than 15 exclusive titles, said Tretton, who added that it also took time for developers to turn out blockbuster games for the PlayStation 1 and PlayStation 2which dominated their respective console cycles.

The PS3 exclusives include "Warhawk," dragon-combat title "Lair," and Sony's newly released baseball game "MLB: The Show."

Sony suffered part shortages and delays ahead of the PS3 launch and production costs associated with the new console drove the company into the red.

The machine's high cost is largely a result of Sony's decision to put its expensive new Blu-ray DVD technology in the PS3, a move it hopes will drive adoption of the company's high-definition player.

The PS3's price, which compares with the $400 high-end Xbox 360 and the $250 Wii, has proved to be an obstacle, Tretton said.

"There's no question that that's a challenge. Hopefully content helps to deliver the proof points and the justification behind the cost of the machine," said Tretton, who could not say when the PS3's price would come down.

what would also help is if they actually include a hdmi cable so it's hi-def gaming/movie out of the box.

dude a HDMI cable is only like $10 at Monoprice.com...but i hear you Sony could include it. Maybe they will this christmas....create a new PS3 bundle with Spider Man 3 bluray, a PS3 and a HDMI cable....$449...yeah...that would be nice...
Although I don't consider MLB:The Show a must have, the could have mentioned Heavenly Sword, Uncharted, and Ninja Gaiden.
Are we ever going to get something that will blow anything that the 360 can do out of the water?!? Everything that has been mentioned as a future release seems like it can be done easily on the 360. We need something that makes Gears of War look like it is definetly on an inferior (graphical wise) system. Our system is more capable than the 360, is it not?

Maybe they should. Maybe they should not.

If 50% of their customers do not connect their PS3 via HDMI, it's millions of $6 cables that end up in the trash.

You mean like all the RCA cables I have stock piled in the closet?

Ya, because Lair, Uncharted: Drakes Fortune and Ratchet and Clank could all easily be done on the 360

Must have? Sony Exec...dragons and more baseball doesn't make 'em must have for everyone!
Im failing to see the must haves as well, not to mention the last must have that had me considering the system (Motorstorm, along with wanting a blu-ray player) completely sucked. I think the PS3's problems could be a lot bigger than anyone is willing to recognize.

Normal people don't shop at or know about Monoprice.com, normal people shop at Best Buy, Circuit City, Sears, Target et al. and the simple cable is a $75-$100 Monster Cable...

Exactly. I also have tons of RCA and component cables piled up in my closet.

In a sense, it's better to let people buy what they NEED, rather than spend millions on cables people will NOT USE.

I know the legend still pegs these HDMI cables at $100, but I don't assume people are less able to locate the $6 ones than I am.

Lairs... may be. I guess this is just my opinion but the others?

Normal people are dumb, eh?

You, on the other hand, are smart and can find them for $6.
With only 82k units sold in april (US), I'd be convincing buyers also!

I wouldn't say dumb, but the vast majority of "average" users....you know, the ones that only have a HD set because of the commercials they've seen or because the salesperson showed it to them....are going to pick up cables locally and they will get ripped off.

I know I never heard of Monoprice before coming here....show me a B&M store that sells HDMI cables for less than $25 or $30. Hell, even Walmart is totally overpriced on these things. A quick check of their website shows a couple for less than $30.

Uninformed is a better word to use for the normal/average PS3/HD set owner.

The must haves for me at this point are:

Heavenly Sword

Ratchet & Clank

Uncharted...

Colin McRae

Madden

I might get Warhawk, but want to play a demo (or at least the beta first)

I will probably add more stuff later (MGS, FF..., White Knight) but they are so far away it doesn't seem practical to plan on them yet.

After seeing more Lair videos it no longer looks like something I want to invest in.

Not coming with an HDMI cable? Who cares, in this day and age if you aren't price checking online before shopping at local b&m you are spending too much, and that is your choice.

The only must haves for me are exclusives, and right now, Lair is the one I'm waiting for. I'll be sorely disappointed if it's bad game that looks pretty. I think it'll do the job, though.

I don't see why they couldn't, from a technical standpoint. The only reason they wouldn't be done "easily" is because they were designed specifically for the PS3. Just like how games made specifically for the 360 aren't done "easily" on the PS3.

But this isn't about the 360, it about whether or not those games mentioned are "must haves". I think for PS3 owners they are for the most part, but I don't think the majority of the gaming world is all that enthused.

What video changed your mind about Lair? I thought they've all looked pretty spectacular thus far.
My purchases this year are goin to be

Uncharted (PS3)

Socom (PS3)

Halo 3 (360)

and one more..

maybe Madden, DIRT, or Rachet and Clank.
