Everything went just as planned. This is keeewwwll !!!!!!!!

I went from having about 6 hours at high quality to about 60 hours at high quality! All for $99 bucks! Thank you, Thank you, Thank you. You guys in the trenches sure know your sh--! As you can tell I am pretty pumped about this. I used to have to delete shows so I could free up room on my hard drive. Not any more. Until I have so much more crap that takes up the next 160gb hd that is! And I will have to upgrade to a 320gb..... :( Maybe the 6000's will be out by then.

Thank you to all on this forum that contribute to things that make rtv better.

p.s. My next question is: How can I sneak a fan in this thing? I have read that these drives run hot and might malfunction. Is this a thing of the past or should I still be concerned?

I will be swapping out my 1st hard drive tonight. Yippee! I bought the 160 gb Maxtor over at Best Buy for $99 (after rebate). I've read all the how-to's and what-not-to-do's. The information from this and other sites has been outstanding! Correction, I was actually going to try to add this hd to my 4080.

Any body have any last minute advice for a novice tinkerer?

Always, absolutely always, double, triple check your drive jumpering.

Can't count how many times I've seen people complain that they're getting "Please Wait" of death, only to later realize that they forgot to rejumper the new drive to Master. I'd say this is the most common pitfall.

Fortunately, it's far from fatal.

Don't forget to patch the drive at the end, otherwise you'll be back here asking "why do i only have 30 minutes of record time?"

If RTVPatch is only seeing 137GB instead of 160GB then you've got problems - use PCI card if your drive came with one or update to latest BIOS for your motherboard.

In addition to lizard's advice, some have had success by using the RTVPatch2.1.3beta.exe version when even a new ATA133 card in the pc was being used and RTVPatch only saw 137GB.

Yes, read above. Instead of making a new post I edited my first post. It was easier than I thought to add the hd. I had taken out hard drives, sound cards, etc. etc. before so this was a piece of cake. Hope everything holds together now. :)

i've toyed with the idea of putting something like this in my 5040 but even when the unit records for a while the drive doesn't seem to get that warm...guees the built-in fan is doing a good job keeping it cool

(editing your top post in an ongoing thread like this only causes confusion)

Sorry, this is the first forum type web site that I have been on and I'm not familiar with all the "in's and out's" yet. Thanks for letting me know!

Huskerfan, here's a neat little trick... a lot of us old timers use.

Just scan the topics for the new message icon
http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/images/firstnew.gif

And click on that. Doing so takes you to the first new post which is all I care about, I've read everything else before. This can get confusing if you come in without scanning everything, but it's a helpful tool.

This website will be far more confusing that upgrading a replay drive. =)

This is why I use removable bays and have one as master on primary and the other as master on secondary. No need to change jumpers. I did this for transferring of shows. I will be doing a hdd upgrade in the coming days also.

Glad it worked out for you. Do you also have dvarchive set up? If not, time to play with that. If so, no reason to go much bigger than 160 any more...just throw additional HDs in your pc instead. (I've got 3 200gb drives in the pc I use for dvarchve, plus a 200gb drive in one replay and another 200gb drive in another, so in all I've got a terrabyte of video storage...great for warehousing movies that I can see later on.)

asinshesq,

I also bought a dvd burner so my next project will be to tinker around with Womble and DVArchive to copy stuff to disc. Thanks again for all the advice everyone.

The last upgrade I did, I used external firewire enclosures. Worked slick.

'smatter of fact, having external enclosures has greatly increased my hardware karma. No longer do I have to crack open the computer case just because I have a new drive or something.

And it's been years since I plugged a steam iron into the back of my computer.

That's perfectly acceptable, just make sure you don't plug the iron into the UPS :D

Ahh but a good story lives on forever! I loved the steam iron story.

Good job Husker, it's a great feeling... master of your storage universe!

After seeing the inside of a Replay up close and personal for the first time, I myself am not worried about heat build up from a 7200 RPM drive.

Compared to a regular PC, there is PLENTY of open space in there with a single drive setup (the other vents not being blocked by the hard drive). So ventilation should not be a problem. The stock (is it 80MM?) fan is placed right by the power supply which I assume is going to generate the most heat.

On the flip side, a new Dell PC we picked up for my mom is pretty "sardined" inside with a 7200 RPM drive upgrade and basically ONE FAN (that big honking exhaust fan that every Dell seems to have) cooling the whole case. So if that thing can stay cool with a 7200 RPM drive, I'm sure the Replay can too.
