My PWD6UY purchase from Dell.

Why Dell? They have great prices, it’s certainly not for the good customer support. I have bought a lot of products from Dell—the computer I’m typing on is from Dell, my canon Digital camera and mini DV camcorder are from Dell etc. But Dell does have a great return policy and the price of their shipping--usually $0--can’t be beat.

I ordered the 6UY on 8/26 so I would think I was one of the earliest to buy from Dell. I had to call 2 or 3 times before I got a customer service rep in the small business section to recognize that they had access to this model. Living in NH sales tax is not a concern because there isn’t one. With some brief negotiation I was quoted a price which was within a few dollars of the lowest I saw doing a dealtime and pricegrabber search. The lowest prices now are $50 to 75 lower than my price (wonder if they’re still headed down), but shipping was of course . . . free! :) The sales rep wanted to ship it overnight air for free, but I said no way ground shipping is fine. Once shipping cost is considered, the price was still lower than anything those search engines turn up today. Oh and the best part is the sales rep included the stand for that price as well! :D

The next day, I see the order on the Dell web site and there is no stand listed. :( I call back the rep and he tells me don’t worry, the stand is included. I give him my e-mail and ask him to double check this for me and I get back an e-mail telling me plasma I bought comes with the stand. I start tracking through Electrograph (Dells supplier of Plasmas) and Eagle (the shipper). Electrograph confirms no stand with this plasma. Back to the Dell and the rep insists it comes with the stand. Next day (8/29) call Eagle and the plasma is in route and am told there is only one box being shipped. Due to the Labor day weekend the plasma is to arrive the following Tuesday, 9/2. Back to the rep again and he insists the stand is in the box. When I ask what he’s going to do if (when) I open the box on 9/2 and there is no stand. If so, he tells me he will have Dell ship me one for free.

Tuesday arrives. The local shipper arrives and it’s a good thing I’m there because he’s alone and when I see him precariously trying to get the 6UY our of the back of the truck from 4 feet in the air with no loading ramp I rush to help. Then, the plasma’s here and there is no stand of course. My wife is at a loss (even though I tried to prepare her for this eventuality) as to how any company could ship a “TV†without a stand. Call to the Dell sales rep and leave a message telling him there is no stand. When I check my e-mails a hour later there is a message telling me the stand is ordered and will be delivered by next day air. I check the Dell website and the order is there, but . . . the price is listed as $225. Then as I begin call the rep to find out what is going on, I notice that in the payment method box it just says adjustment—there is no credit card listed—and I put the phone back down.

Of course the stand was back ordered by then and was not to arrive until 9/17. I started a thread last week looking for help making a temp stand and of course Brucer came through with a suggestion that worked. I’ve been using the 6UY since last Saturday and loving it. Oh and Rogo even offered to give up a free stand he was getting to pass it along to me. So thanks to all, this board is amazing.

On 9/17, my stand arrived. Dell, of course, still lists my order status for this stand, which is now sitting pretty under the 6UY, as still being in production! Hey, you never know maybe they’ll send me another one.

So was this a satisfying buying experience? Well it was a typical Dell experience. It wasn’t pretty, but I got what I wanted at the price I wanted. And I had waited for 10 months to even buy a Plasma, so I couldn’t really complain about a couple of weeks.

Congrats on the purchase man. I can't wait until my time comes. :)

Qucik question...what exactly is Dell's return policy? I see a lot of people mention how great it is.

Basically, you can return it within 30 days with no or very minimal questions asked. And I understand that others have returned plasmas. It's not that exceptional for a B&M but is is for online.

Here is a remote eye I have running to a harmon Kardon receiver. It's infrared and works fine. Absolutely no interference from the plasma. Just thought that was interesting.

Glauco, I know it's a fine piece of craftsmanship. Brucer must be jealous! :) Who would have thought that my wife would have wanted to use the real one!

BTW, I was ready to use the prop it against the wall method.

John:

Thanks for the story about Dell and the photos of your set up. Looks great! Did you get the DVI card for the 6UY? If so, could you tell us how well it works with your STB? There have been some compatibility problems reported with some STBs and the V1 DVD player.

JSchulte, thanks for the pics. The temp stand looks great (would look better with grey/black paint, but can't cry over spilt milk). Also, great story! Very motivating.

However, you broke a cardinal rule when taking the pictures.

Rule:

If one takes a picture of his/her HDTV setup, it has to either be:

A) Turned off

B) Turned on and showing an HD signal.

JSchulte,

I ordered 6UY from Dell on 9/15. On Dell site it is listed as shipped, with no tracking number.

Did you have to call Eagle yourself and Dell gave you a tracking number?

What is Eagles telephone number?

Thank you,

Dimitry

I ordered my Laptop from Dell. Nice Laptop.

But, my credit card ended up being used on every porn website in Pakistan

plus some lengthy phone sexx.

Called once for Dell Tech Support late on PST. I am sure the call was routed to Pakistan or India to talk with a computer support tech. Useless.

The reason to order through Dell is price price price. Not service.

The Panny Plasma's are just drop shipped through another vendor.

The other reason, if they really screw up, you can sue Michael Dell.

We know where he lives.

Most of the online vendors are just broker's who order through warehouses. I think Pac-2000 which has the best prices is just a website and the Panny Plasma comes from Tweeter's supplier. There is no B&M store. It could be a guy in a basement in his underware.

Since these companies are virtual and have no overhead, negoatiate the price down to cost +$100.

This is why the warehouse ships the plasma right away and it you need an accessory like a tic tac, it is shipped differently and takes forever.
