My BB success story

I rushed to Best Buy here in Fresno the first weekend the HD-A1 was available, hoping to snag one. They just had one display model and were sold out, so I got on the 'net and found OneCall had some and ordered mine, which I received the following Thursday.

By then BB had their display unit up and running into the usual Westinghouse LCD, but set to output 720p!! needless to say the demo just didn't impress at all, and the remote wasn't available to change the output resolution.

I found a sales guy, one who seemed halfway knowledgeable in that he knew that Mits. 1080p dlps did not properly process 1080i. I told him about the mistake in the output setting and he said he'd try to find the remote and try to fix it.

Since then I've gone back 3 or 4 times to buy new HD-DVD discs and each time the demo was still set to output 720p.

Today, after work, I went in to pick up a copy of Unforgiven, but could not find it. A sales rep asked if he could help and I asked him if they had any copies of Unforgiven. He looked on the player display and at a new rack in the dvd section devoted to HD-DVD and none were out, so he volunteered to go in the back and look. I mentionned to him the fact that the output wasn't set properly on their display unit, and explained what goes on with the 720p downconversion. He disappeared to the back of the store.

A few minutes later, my guy and 2 other sales reps including an assistant manager came out with handfulls of Unforgiven and Full Metal Jacket along with--- SUPRISE!!---the remote for the display player. I showed them the resolution button and they started changing it and discovered for themselves how much better the thing looked at 1080i. Suddenly a couple of these guys who'd been less than impressed with HD-DVD started staring at the screen with their mouths open!!

Hopefully next time I go in there the little 1080i light will still be on.

Went to the BB in Hoover yesterday to look for FMJ and Unforgiven. While I was there I checked out the HD-A1 / Westy 42" demo, and surprise, surprise...it was set at 720p. The remote was behind the unit, so I changed it to 1080i. Mucho better. No copies of the new releases, though.
I have also seen the same demo at my local BB and the player was set to 720p.

Today I was there to buy a HD DVD movie and I asked about the players. They tell me they maybe get three per week and they are gone before they hit the floor. So then I ask at the in store Magnolia if the have the XA1 and get pretty much the same answer only this time the sales geek adds he wished he had a truckload of them to sale. Funny thing is he doesn't remember me from two weeks before the Toshiba launch when he told me HD DVD was not really HD and I should wait for BD. :)
COOL , I do the same type of thing when I visit any electronics stores and usually the salespeople are very open to listening ( unless of course you know more than the guys in the high end shops and then they ignore you and try to chase you out of the store :D ) . I have actually had store managers offer me a job right on the spot , LOL .

It would be great if there were some sort of "lock" feature for their demo .. YOU KNOW BD fans are going to he heading to ALL the displays now to sabatoge our precious HD-DVD.... On second thought perhaps they aren't smart enough to think of this... HOWEVER since I just wrote it we are all screwed... the end is NEIGH!!!

ACTUALLY FUNNY STORY: When I bought my HD-DVD player at BB the General Manager was right there while I was waxing intellectually with the salespeople, and I actually had a group around me of 4 employees (so naturally he wanted to know what was going on) When I left that night I was offered an interview!! AND tomorrow I have my (hopefully) final interview... I was in the mood for a career change... and Managers there DO VERY VERY WELL.... Wish me luck!! At 27 I thought it was time for a career change, and the opportunity to set the world straight and sell a product I love doesn't hurt!!!
Good luck! I am sure the people in your area will appreciate someone who knows what the "people under them" are selling. Doesn't that sound nice that there will be people under you? :D
BROTHER.... that is the GOAL....

"COULD YOU GET ME THOSE TPS REPORTS ASAP?"
I did the same thing at Xbox360 launch. Even worst, OWN Microsoft REP setting the machine to NORMAL TV 480p on a giant 65 inch tv. Looked like crap. Told them about the SWITCH and changed it to 720p (Normal rez for the Xbox 360 games) , games looked ton better, than gave me promo stuff.. LOL

Hey when they hire you as a manager could you get me another HD-A1 at cost? jk :)

When you are a manager, don't be surprised if you get a memo from home office dictating that all HD DVD displays are to be set to 720p.

They know how to turn relatively intelligent people into blue shirted clones whose only goal in life is to sell over priced cables and extended warranties - oh, and to remind everyone they meet that they are not on commission.
Sounds like a movement has been started to help out BB! :D
Now I'm curious to go back into my BB and check it out.

I tried going to 720 P at home on my Ae900U projector. The picture looked about the same but the menus were really jagged around the edges so I set it back.
I know all kind of electronics and all that good stuff, what do they say, "a man of many hats master of none."?

I have my fingers crossed, it would be a good career move for me. I have been a banker for 5 years, I am doing the same thing in a bank that I will be doing there... Sales, and I am tried of selling 401K's and CD's to old people... :)

But lets certainly make sure these things are set to their full potential I know my best buy has it set to 1080i.... anyone else?
As a manager he would get the 'yellow' shirt...
I think we should all add our best Best Buy stories in a new thread.I have a whole list. :D

The last one tried to sell me a monster HDMI cable saying I'd never get 1080p out of it without the cable.

FYI Wal-Mart is 5.00 dollars cheaper then BB on all of there HD movies. Just need to find a store that sells them. Not all Wal-Marts do at this time. Just wanted to let you know.

Same thing with me. I looked him in the face and said "that's ok. the player doesn't do 1080p anyway."

He looked pissed.

I stopped going into "Best" Buys some time ago, and my blood pressure dropped 10 points . .. ;)

If we had Truth in Brand Names Laws they would have change their name to "Never Less than Full Retail" Buy. And OhMyGod, their Monster Cable prices gotta have 300% profit margin. No wonder the sales guy looked pissed - he probably lost more commission on the monster cable scam by your knowing your stuff than he made on the A1.

That's funny mine raised 20! :) Anyway I go in for charity work and use it as a training write-off. My auditor questioned me on it and I told him what I was doing, he said said "bless you" and that I was doing God's work.

The only reason i went there is because i had about $300 in gift certificats and coupons from Reward Zones. Plus I got the points put on my card. In total, it cost me $389 with a 4 year service plan.

I wonder what happens if it breaks in 3 years and (god forbid) there are no more HD-DVD players.
