i haven't tried this yet. i wantd to get opinions on this...

in the service menu, my past few TV's have had adjustments for vertical and horizontal position. does anyone think that maybe, say once a week, if one adjusts the picture position a little bit, that burn in lines from black bars (on the side or on top depending on your tv type and source aspect ratio) would be less ikely to occur? any thoughts??

Black bars are the absence of electorns. This is the part of the tube that does not burn in. It is the bright white areas that would burn in.

That would only at most give you a fuzzier line between the darker burned-in area and the darker area, it does not prevent burnin. Your best protection is reducing your contrast setting to about 50% and calibrating with an AVIA DVD plus mixing up the aspect ratio programs you watch. Don't leave a program with black bars on overnight for example.
