My DIY gray screen test
Today I conducted an experiment...
Da-Lite was kind enough to send me a swatch of their Da-Mat HC gray screen material. During a previous test, I taped the HC material to the wall and could immediately see the improvement in black level.
A friend told me that Lowe's (Large DIY/hardware chain) has a computerized gizmo that could optically match any color sample to a paint recipe. I took the Da-lite sample to them and they did match it. I mean damn near perfectly! I purchased a quart of their best paint in an interior flat finish. I painted (rolled) it on to a smooth primed board.
I then ran the obvious test between the swatch and the painted board. I cannot tell the difference! The black levels look great with either.
The gray screen surfaces that are out there (stewart & da-lite) are all less than unity gain and look just like a flat finished surface. I see no magic there.
I believe great HC screens can be made via the paint roller or sprayer for about 20 bucks!

Please allow me to make a comment to your statement above. The GrayHawk is not a matte gray screen. The GrayHawk is just below Unity gain @ .95 (or about the same as a matte white wall) but it is actually a "Gain screen". If you strip the GrayHawk's translucent optical coating away, the screen's gray base coat gain would be less that .7 gain This Gain coating gives the screen better cross reflection and ambient light suppression. It also allows the user to benefit from the advantages of a gray biased screen with out giving up too much light. It may not be "Magic" but one could call it "Current Screen Technology". Certainly many users in this forum have been more than satisfied from the results.

)Thank you Don, I am honored that you responded to my post. I am a soldier out here fighting for the HT geek that is tapped out and cannot put forth the 1500 bucks for one of your very great screens! I think the results from the lowe's "gray Paint" screen is very good considering the 20 bucks. I would not for an instant challenge the legandary (I mean that) stewart Screen technology as the ultimate solution. I would hope that folks would get their HT up and running and then save their pennies for a Grayhawk. You have to realize that we all do not carry the Dr. prefix to our names here...

I did not get the formula nor did they offer it to me. I guess I should have...
