Madpoet,

Open it back up! I can't imagine a more dramatic endorsement of buying from AVS. That was the best thread I have read in months. I think you are missing an opportunity.

Stories about X1 eBay fraud and ancillary threads like the PPPPowerbook elegantly (and sometimes hillariously) drive home a simple point: "Buy from responsible retailers whom you know and trust". Contrast the "eBay experience" to that of buying from one of this board's sponsors who knows every slight (real or imagined) risks infinite dissection here on the forum.

Not my affiliates mate... I'm just a moderator here :). The problem is that we get these threads every few days, and my instructions are that they don't belong here. I understand, and I sympathize. Auction fraud sucks. As someone who both buys and sells on Ebay, I hate to hear about it and have been victim a time or two. But this forum isn't for discussing that. It's for discussing Digital Projectors with and MSRP of under $3500.

I'm sorry, but I just have to mention how funny this is. On the >$3.5k forum people can discuss Shrek 2, NASA, Survivor, Chernobyl, laserdiscs, buttered popcorn, etc. and you guys can't even talk about a purchase of an

i agree with darinp2,

we can talk about all sorts of stuff (nothing to do with projectors) but when it comes to ebay or fraud we get silenced. I dont get it. this is something that SHOULD be allowed because alot of people here get projectors from ebay and its good to know whats going on and how you can protect yourself.

pppowerbook had nothing to do with computers but yet that thread went on for a while. where was the moder when that was going on?

AGREED

What happens if someone gets scammed using a non ebay reseller of projectors(online reseller, authorized distributor etc.)? Are they not allowed to post things of that nature? This should be the place where we find out about that.

In another forum as we speak there is a thread about someone trying to scam people out of speakers using audigon(ebay but for AV equipment). The person posted a warning so people would know not to trust person X(the sale hadn't happend yet). Those kind of warnings and disclaimers are helpful to the AVS community.

Guys... give it a rest. Is it our fault that we actually do our job? ;)

Here's the thing about what Darin said... if I don't post something and close it I get yelled at. If I do post something and close it, apparently I get yelled at. So... you can see where I have a certain problem here. If you'll notice, different forums here have entirely different rules. For instance, in the HTPC forum it's entirely permissible and encouraged to provide links to deals, recommendations, etc; Here of course that is verbotten. It would be nice if we had a free for all place where everyone could toss things about without a care in the world. And those places exist... thousands and thousands of them across the internet. Is it too much to ask that this place not be that? I don't think so.

We don't like closing threads. I get a lot more enjoyment for a good discussion than having to shut down a thread because people can't follow the rules. This forum exists because of the generosity of AVScience and the sponsors. And so there has to be rules for it's existence. If the rules change, I will gladly enforce the new rules. But right now, I go with what I have had explained to me by my predecessors and my bosses. Make sense?

I don't have a problem with people owning something and enforcing rules on what they own. I'm all for it. I wish in the real world you could hire, fire or chastize anyone who wasn't doing their job. Of course, in reality you can't, unless you like going to court.

What is interesting to me is the fact that the rules need to exist in the first place. The entire reason they're needed here (or so we're told) is to prevent 1) loss of business for AVS 2) the board becoming free (and even worse subsidized by AVS) advertising for competitors 3) a general decline of the board into an unitellgible spamfest of deals, scams and ebay auctions.

If AVS had the best prices, availability and customer service, wouldn't the second point be moot? Who would buy from a competitor if other people were advertising higher prices from less reliable vendors. You can't really argue AVS would lose business to competition like that. And for competitors to benefit they actually have to make sales - unlikely to happen if their 'ads' are uncompetitive to begin with. (Spelling it out - some of those ads obviously must be competitive, apparently dangerously so.)

It seems kind of like selling cars to me - MSRP only, control of information flow. Kind of silly, since as the mod's say, we can all go to google and find it out anyway. The info even gets PM'd around on this board. I think a little more credit needs to be given to the people that frequent this forum. No one here is going to buy an item for something other than a good price (espeically the

My 2 cents is that I

a. Its crazy people paying more for a projector on ebay than it is new.

b. Buying a projector from someone with no feedback, these people spring up all the time. I`m sure almost all of them are taking the money and running.

c. Spending that much money on an item on ebay- full stop!
