So here's the story. I build cabinets every day. I have access to millions of dollars worth of machinery such as CNC's, saws, sanding equipment and even a spray booth with ANY hardwood finish I desire...or a glossy black if I go that way. Basically, the easy part will be building the enclosure for the sub...but knowing the dimensions and details are another thing.

I will never need insane amounts of bass so I am thinking of just keeping this build within' a decent budget which will also allow me to possibly build another down the road if I ever feel the need for more.

Since the Shiva-X has alot of rave reviews I have it on the top of my list. It's decently priced and has pretty solid performance. It's around $185 but I would consider something at this price range or less that is somewhat equal to the task.

For an amp I'm thinking about the O-Audio 500w plate amp that sells for around $230. It has all the power I'd ever need and also comes with a Parametric EQ which I think is worth the extra money.

Since I haven't built a sub before I'm not sure if a 300w BASH amp would be sufficient. It's $80 less but doesn't have the EQ. Perhaps someone can shed some light on this....

I also would appreciate some direction toward some info on enclosure plans. I don't listen at extreme volumes and ported/sealed does not matter much to me. Size doesn't matter either...although I'd like to keep it reasonable but with a 12" driver it's not likely I'll need to worry about the enclosure being too big anyway.

I have the potential to build something very nice but I really don't like rushing into something. It has to be perfect or I'll throw it in the river. Any info will be greatly appreciated.

For reference, my room is small-med in size. I use the sub for about 75% tv/movies and 25% music. I probably don't need to spend $400 on components to satisfy my needs...so lets just make $400 the maximum for my driver/amp budget. Thanks again....

sounds like you have done your homework and will be happy with your results.

the shiva is a strong performer, the o-audio is a good plate amp.

sealed enclosures are relatively insensitive to size, so you have lots of flexibility. a good starting point would be a 3.5 cubic foot internal stuffed with fiberglass to provide a net effective internal volume of around 4-4.5 cubic feet.

i am a big fan of component parts as they end up being cheaper in the long run.

for the amp and the eq as an option behringer ep2500/4000 and mic2200 for eq. that will come in a little over your budget now, but when you decide to upgrade, for whatever reason, it will end up cheaper than your current plan.

can't wait to see your build thread.

So something in the area of 14"x14"x18" would give me that volume? Is there a previous build of a Shiva sub that has the measurements required for the driver opening? It would be easy if one was infront of me...and I can always wait until it is but it's nice to draw out the plans beforehand. Internal bracing is also something I'd be interested to see for an enclosure of the dimensions I came up with....

Well I did find something interesting HERE

Build a big box!

If size really doesn't matter, consider going with a ported design 6 to 10 cu-ft with very low tuning. You can select either a 12" or 15" driver.

For example, my sub is a 15" Dayton RS390HO in a 7.5 cu-ft box. No stuffing. Tuned to 13 hz. I have a DCX2496 for x-over and EQ. Plate amp is 250w and more than needed. Room is approximately 12'2" x 13'4" with an 8 foot ceiling. I have strong bass into the low teens.

I know it would be a tad outside of your budget, but, Kevin (the owner of Exodus audio) is running a special right now on the Shiva-X and one or two passive radiators. 2 PRs, a Shiva-X, and the 500W plate amp all in a 18X21X21 (exterior measurements) box makes for some pretty sexy performance in a pretty small package.

My wife vetoed larger designs... this one is something that she can live with. Kevin has the measurements/plans in pdf form on his website. My only request: don't buy the last ones... I'm saving up a little bank for my own!

I've been contemplating the Shiva, I can't find anything else in it's price range that performs better. I didn't know about any specials going on. I was also looking to build a 3cf box with the Shiva and 2 PR15's. I know the box might be a tad small but it still has some serious performance. [email protected]

So where are the deals on this package? I didn't see one at DIYcable although they do have a decent price on the shiva and 1 PR15. Actually, I see that you can add a second PR for $60 which is a good price....if that's the deal you mean. $295 for the Shiva/2 PR15's/Mass Discs and mounting screws.

I'm wondering what type of performance hit I'd take by doing that same build with 1 PR15 and a 300w Bash instead of the 500w version?

Wow!! $75

Are there any charts to see what kind of performance these give? N/m I click on the PDF file

It seems that it wouldn't keep up with the Shiva but for $75 I could build a pretty solid budget sub because I wouldn't need more than a $150 300w bash amp with it.

With your talents, why not build a piece of furniture that you would be proud of, and look much better in your room than a black box? Have you looked at the Easy End Table build thread? The only mod I would make of that is having the amp located on the bottom with the driver so that it is not visible from any place within the room.

That's an interesting idea. My mind has been leaning towards something simple for the first build...I suppose that's why I didn't really consider a piece of furniture.

Read NeoDan's various threads on the subject...you are the person that can take advantage of his previously designed subs! And, the Wife Approval Factor would be incredibly high on your side...you may want to consider two subs as flanking tables.

Someone posted this link before. it gives a decent amount of info on those drivers.
