Well I am going to drop my tvix and try to use a computer for this one.

So I have a computer I am not using so I want to test the water with it for an HTPC.

I have an Intel E7200 on a gigabyte EP45 mb 2 gigs of memory and an ATI 4830 video card with HDMI out.

I will also dl the 7 rtm version and I assume that I need 32 bit and not 64.

Do I need to go 4 gigs?

can this setup play all the files (formats) that the tvix can?

Mainly I have my dvd's both in directory format and ISO's. I have some of my old mst3k shows in wav files. I do not have any HD/BLU stuff in any kind of files to put on this.

I am going to use this on a 46" Vizio LCD and later on a 60" Sony lcos system. But I don't think that makes any difference.

I am sure that after getting this up I will need 5000 additional codex files and 200 software addons. God only knows I hope not LOL

nope with win 7 rtm you only need haali media splitter to open mkv and ffdshow or ac3filter for audio.

also 2gb ram will be enough. no need to go x64 unless you have tons of ram.

one thing I forgot, what do I do for remote control?

some tuner cards do as well...

if not you can just buy a cheap mce remote with an ir receiver, or spend lots on a gyration or harmony, you have plenty of options...

OTA, QAM (unencrypted cable) and SD sat/cable boxes.

if you get a capture card ( a tuner card than accepts a video input) it should be able to connect to dish, but it wont get any HD channels.

you could get the hd pvr but then you lose the ability to watch live tv, only record channels...

if you want live HDTV your only options OTA and QAM.
