My friend has a 1080i TV that supports 720P, should he set his PS3 to 720P only?

The XMB at 720P displays soft quality and doesn't look vibrant at all, yet the XMB looks vibrant and sharp at 1080i
. The XMB native res is 1080p resolution correct?.

In terms of games, such games like Bioshock/MGS4/FNR4/ect that boot up at 1080i automatically by default have the opposite result, they have a soft quality to them but look sharp and vibrant on 720p

So what should he do, I told him 720p seems to be the way to go so he won't have to keep switching res back and forth when he plays those games I mentioned, but he hates the look of the XBM at 720p, which is clearly the result of XMB native res being 1080p.

Just an oddball thought. It almost sounds like his TV uses different display options based on the Resolution. I used to use the XMB at 720p and it looked fine.
What do you mean, I would think the difference in the quality of the XMB, one looks soft and less vibrant(720p) and the other looks Vibrant and sharp( 1080i ), meant the XMB didn't really support 720p and looked its proper best at 1080 res(I or P) since it is the native res of the XMB?. btw this is through HDMI, his set has all kind of sources, from AV to Component all the way to even VGA.
Things like color brightness hue sharpness etc... can have different settings on some TVs at different resolutions.
Oh right, so you recommend trying to see if he can make the display look vibrant and sharp at 720p via the settings. You know that is a good idea, I will tell him to try and calibrate the set on 720p on the PS3 XMB to point it looks to his eyes like he wants, because I already told him that switching res stuff is pointless when you can just pick 720p and be done with that switching stuff.
1080 in theory should always look better because it's the TV's native resolution. The problem is that some games' 1080 support on the PS3 is half-assed, so those particular games look better if they output 720p and let the TV upscale it.

Ultimately, whatever your friend thinks looks better is what he should go with. In principle he should leave it at 1080 and just manually change it if he's dealing with a game that looks bad in 1080 mode.

my last tv was a 1080i crt that also supported 720p. i had everything checked off in the settings except 1080p. i let the ps3 do whatever it wanted to do with games. i never had any problems doing so.
If his TV natively 1080i, then thats what both machines should be set to for maximum quality. If, like me, the Tv is actually a native 720p with 1080i support, I would suggest defaulting to 720p for both dashboard and XMB.
1080i but yes check them all off and let the ps3 handle it.

Do those games support 1080i? Because, if not, they may be downscaling to 480p.
