My humble first viewing.

Before reading further I want to say I have been disappointed with every lcos I have ever seen to date and really had my doubts going into this regardless the hype.

Ok heres my initial reaction to seeing the Ruby for the first time. Ive only spent 30 minutes with it so far. I will get a better feel for this over the next few days.

I do not have the hot corner issue. At least so far I do not see it. Only very little in the upper left near the boarder. My red is shifted up one pixel but the rest is perfect. Im feeding it 1080i HD and DVD scaled to 1080i via DVI to DVI. I do not think I would gain anything going into HDMI if my source does not originate HDMI. I clearly prefer iris auto mode but over time may watch some things with iris off. I did not like iris on.

I also have a mercury hd 3 chip dlp. This is the best 3 chip DLP I have seen. Its very clean and has a feature called saturation that paints the image on the screen giving it a thick rich crt look. Of course it has plenty of pop. This dlp has excellent blacks and punch. The Ruby matches the blacks. It is not superior in black level as some would have you believe but finally lcos blacks are as good as DLP. The dlp still wins with in your face punch at the upper end. The ruby still lacks something in bright scenes with a little flatness to it but still looks great. That haze is finally gone.

This is the best lcos I have seen to date. Period. Its quiet and stylish. I like the features. Its relaxing to watch. I found the Brightness visually to be on par with some of the brighter 1 chip DLPs. The bulb is still new of course. I do not like the wide grey boarder that spills beyond the image but masking will hide that.

Im really looking forward to spending a few days with this to really learn all the settings and maybe throw some filters at it to see what this can do.

I am truly excited about this machine. Most projectors I know within minutes if its not for me but this one has true keepers potential. I cannot envision anyone buying a mid priced 720 1 chip dlp over this. Does the Ruby clearly clean the floor with DLP as some say, 720 1 chip, in many ways yes, it looks damn good and for the money its a winner. I do think we will see sub 10k 1080 dlp 1 chip as a threat but its nice everyone will have a choice. Each technology will do some things better then the other.

In the past lcos could not be taken seriously but those days are gone. Hands down they are finally making progress with lcos. I cant wait to spend more time with this but I have to get it mounted first. I could live with this machine and be happy with it for the next few years.

Please remember everything Ive said so far came from limited viewing time. On a scale of 1 to 10 I rate this at a 6 or 7 so far. For me this is a good score considering its rt out of the box.

How bad is this? Has everyone who owns this unit experienced the light spill?

Andy
Thanks for your initial thoughts!

Alan, from your experience so far what max size and type screen would you suggest for most (not black wall bat caves, etc) rooms?
Alan, I know you just received the RUBY and have not thoroughly reviewed it yet, but I respect your opinion, and was wondering if you think it would be worth it to buy the RUBY this close to the show. I had tried the new BENQ8720 for a couple weeks, and thought the picture was good but not good enough for the price. I had decided to wait until after the show and see what was around the corner (OPTOMA H81). After reading all the reviews and threads on RUBY, and wife giving me the go ahead, I am very tepted. Also thanks for the info so far, appriciate your efforts.
Thanks for the nice, initial review! Can't wait to hear more.

Pics would be nice when you get the time. Thanks. :)
Alan,

Glad to hear you finally got one to play with. As I spend more time with the Ruby I find it to be truly a solid performer. I wonder what proper calibrations will do for it. Hopefully, wm, darinp, and the cine4home folks will come up with some good stuff.

One thing I did notice though is that the Ruby just doesn't seem as smooth as a CRT. Maybe its the sharpness or the pixels. I seem to notice the what appears to be dancing pixels from time to time where my Barco would be pretty "solid". Seems to be a little "grainy". Maybe I just need to play around with it a little more. It definitely is going to replace the Barco, regardless. Plug and play. 40 some lbs and the box it came in is smaller than the CRT.

Please keep us updated on your observations.

Tryg I really did get lucky. This shows the possibility some of these issues can be corrected. Yes things will get better.

I do not find it a deal killer for myself. Not as bad or bright as the G series Dilas.

My bulb is new but I zoomed this up to 8 feet wide and still found it had enough brightness. Im firing onto a fabric acoustic screen with a negative gain so things could only improve on a solid screen. I plan on trying different materials over the next few days. My room has complete light control.

We are so close to the show if you have time on your side I would wait. Not that I have heard any big secrets but you never know if there will be something that will surprize us all. The Ruby will still be in demand for months to come. If anything it vendors may offer more competitive pricing over time. Something you will benefit from.

Welcome to the digital world. Digital projector are not as forgiving as CRTs. CRTs naturally blend and smooth some of the digital source noise so its not as apparent. SXRD is also better at this then DLP but it will show mosquito noise if it rears its head. The Algolith Digital Mosquito may be a good companion for this once its done.

Thanks for the report, Alan!

I would be very interested in hearing your impressions of the Ruby vs. C3X once you have had enough time to tweak up the Ruby to your liking.I feel that the C3X just might be the closest digital competitor currently available to the Ruby, despite the difference in brightness and resolution. Or do you think that the Mercury HD makes for a more worthy comparison?

I just got my this morning and I have to tell you that I have never seen such a beatifull image... very uniform, the colors are just stunning. I only could imagen when Blueray/HD DVD comes out.

PS thanks for AVS for keep me informed. Rick
Alan,

Once again, you seem to know exactly what I'm trying to describe. Hopefully, Algolith will make the Mosquito a little more affordable, for me, with time.
Alan:

Glad to see you seem to like it so far. Pretty sweet huh?

Boy would I not like to be a 720DLP company right now. They had better pray the 1080dlp's are a major improvement, but the bar has been set WAY high by the Ruby. If we can tweek some of the niggles ... look out!
Alan,

Congrats. Did you get anymore time last night to view the Ruby?
Alan,

You should get one these NeuNeu DVD players and tell us how good a DVD can look upscaled to 1080p.

We all want to know :)

Review is Average but hey 1080p is 1080p! Can 1080i on a higher rated one like the Oppo look better than 1080p on average rated like NeuNeu?

I want to see it on the Ruby :)

Thanks for the quick review Allan. Looking forward to some pictures :)

Edit: You beat me to it Tryg :)
The oppo looks beautiful to me and the deinterlacer on the Ruby I think is exceptionally good, according to GregR and others.
Congrats Alan! I think all your comments so far are right on the money.
I wouldn’t touch the NeuNeo using 480i DVDs with a stick. I would suspect, reading from that review, your going to get a terrible, soft picture from DVDs on the NeuNeo, 1080p or not. If it looks bad at 720p, it’s going to look worst at 1080p. HDVs would probably look decent.

That’s just me of course. Why mess around with a crappy upscaling unit when you have the Oppo.
