I have previously stated that the JVC and the E-80 were close when compared at their best resolution- Both had their attributes. But it was unfair to the JVC at SP because the E-80 was recorded at XP on the HHD for the same 2 hour segment essentially. I never did an SP E-80 comparison to the SP JVC S-VHS 7800U. This is so very relevant because most people will record that 2 hour or less movie off CBS,Showtime, HBO at SP speed on the E-80. And I will do that 2 hour HBO movie on both at SP. I know which will win but I will still be objective ,because someone else will also do it. Now we know that for more than 2 hours the E-80 has flex and that is what makes it better. But for the average movie 2 hours or under at SP for both -the JVC with Fuji Film tape S-VHS will be superlative color and resolution. There is no doubt in my mind. This should NOT happen on a DVDR- It should not be beaten by an S-VHS recorder same feed, same show at SP both. It would be ridiculous. I will find out.

As others have pointed out, it *doesn't matter* if a SVHS machine has better picture quality (which I'm sure many would debate anyway), given that DVD-Rs are:

Smaller & Lighter

Widely playable on consumer machines

Usable, duplicatable, editable on computers

Less expensive

Random-access / Non-linear

Won't wear out

Given all those things, it would take a picture quality comparable to HDTV 720P at least for any linear media to be superior to DVD-R, and even then I'd wager that most people would prefer the flexibility, portability and durability of a DVD-R.
